For several years now, I've had this problem with swallowing and what appears to be a choking sensation. It is most triggered by starchy foods (rice, bread, pasta), but has happened with other foods as well, and sometimes with nothing at all. It's like as I'm swallowing the food/drink a pocket of air is coming up and they won't let each other cross. Eventually I end up with very loud horrible choking hiccup-like spasms. My family knows better than to Heimlich me, as I can talk (not easily) through them, and it's best for me to just wait it out and then take a sip of liquid after it's passed.
