Yes, I had my tonsils out when I was around 6 or 7.
But, unlike many of you, my episodes have never happened at night - only during the day. As described by others, it appears a small portion of the saliva I swallow in the normal course of swallowing, goes into my windpipe completely shutting off my airway. I too panic and fear I will not recover. Mine happens 2 or 3 times a year - so sorry for those of you to whom it happens more frequently! No one can know the horror who has not experienced it! I have been looking for an explanation and will follow up on some of the possibilities posted. It would be interesting if it is somehow related to damages from an operation or medical procedure.

I too have had this happen. 4 times since I had cervical spine disk replacement. I was scared to death. Thought I was going to die. Have you found out how to get air? So sorry for anyone experiencing this.

same thing, happens about 1-2 times a year, face turns red, horrible anxiety, no air can enter, sucking a tiny, tiny croak of air … I still wonder if it is reflux … like a drop of stomach acids hitting the trachea and throwing it into a dead closed fit … people around me terrified wanting to help only making me more anxious about inability to breathe

take omeprazole when this happens and backtrack diet, probably a tomato sauce in there, like salsa or spaghettis, but perhaps not

I believe this condition is related to anxiety. Carbon dioxide build up due to shallow breathing appears to affect the reflex. Try taking deep breathes through out the day and especially when you feel stressed. I have not had a choking episode since I began to monitor my breathing.

I have these spells just like that! they are terrifying at times, I have to calm myself down and gasp for what little air I can get and try to cough the fluid out. Whats odd is it seems to be hereditary, my Mother, Daughter and Sister also do it. Have you found any information?

It has been happening to me for 36 years now. My airway closes 100% and I cannot suck in air. I passed out twice from it(both times over 30 years ago). It takes me about 5 minutes to get through it and then about another 10 minutes to breathe normal again. I have found that TRYING to drink warm-hot liquid starts to help, but the problem is, I usually can't swallow. I have to wait for a split second somewhere during it when I can swallow and it helps a LITTLE Still don't know what it is, but it scares me to death.

I keep choking on saliva when I'm asleep and maybe a little of it when I'm awake. What does this mean? What remedies can I take?

Yes, this happens to me too. So scary. But I held my hands over my head one time, not sure why..... but I could immediately breathe again. I do have post nasal drip and a strong gag reflex, I clear my throat all the time and have occasional heartburn.

Reflux disease. It comes from throat injury during throwing up. Well it did in my case. It's horrible. I think it's just my thoughts. When I'm thinking about something bad it happens. I just choke and almost die. I just keep searching angels and looking for God. Certain spirits stop it. Some cause it. I know it's scary. Don't panic. Fight hard and over power it. Just don't panic. It's happened while I was driving several times.

Well, that's good to know. I just had the worst episode a few minutes ago. Usually, if I have a little air in my lungs, I can let it out slowly, and then gently breathe a little in. This time, I'd been coughing when I choked, so no air. AWFUL!!!!
