But, unlike many of you, my episodes have never happened at night - only during the day. As described by others, it appears a small portion of the saliva I swallow in the normal course of swallowing, goes into my windpipe completely shutting off my airway. I too panic and fear I will not recover. Mine happens 2 or 3 times a year - so sorry for those of you to whom it happens more frequently! No one can know the horror who has not experienced it! I have been looking for an explanation and will follow up on some of the possibilities posted. It would be interesting if it is somehow related to damages from an operation or medical procedure.

It has been happening to me for 36 years now. My airway closes 100% and I cannot suck in air. I passed out twice from it(both times over 30 years ago). It takes me about 5 minutes to get through it and then about another 10 minutes to breathe normal again. I have found that TRYING to drink warm-hot liquid starts to help, but the problem is, I usually can't swallow. I have to wait for a split second somewhere during it when I can swallow and it helps a LITTLE Still don't know what it is, but it scares me to death.
