Chromogenic Bacteria stain on teeth

I've had black line stain since I was a child, and one if my brothers did, as well. Even before the Internet and Google, I always suspected it was genetic and/or related to our body chemistry. I take very good care of my teeth, and it didn't seem to matter how much I brushed or flossed. I was that child who was unfortunate enough to have a Mother who made homemade bread, meals from scratch, sent apples for snack and didn't allow candy or soda. I do believe that it improved with puberty for me. I now have three little boys, and the black line stain kicked in for them all at the age of two....which further supports my theory that it is connected to our hormones, as well. We have a fantastic dentist and hygienist who were very kind about it, said that it is a matter of our body's chemistry, and assured us that we're not trashy :). They even mentioned that it often thrives in cleaner mouths. I have a small scraping tool from CVS. I find the one that looks like a pick works best. It looks as if it could connect to a key chain. I had to try a few before I found the one that was the most effective. I've found that, if I start gradually with my boys when they are little, they are more compliant during tooth cleanings. You have to go back and forth over the same spot for a minute or so before it suddenly "releases." With three mouths in addition to my own, however, sometimes someone slips by my radar. My 1st grader came home yesterday and said his classmates made fun of him and called him gross. It made me feel so badly since its my job to stay in top of the stain! Sometimes it accumulates quickly. I also believe that the structure and the grooves in the teeth play a part. We have a lot of iron in our water, and while it is mostly filtered out, I think this has exacerbated the problem.

I have thinking about why I no longer have those black lines...I speculated that it was because of taking that Augmentin antibiotic since I changed nothing else. But I indeed changed one thing...I quit being so obsessive about brushing all the time and rinsing with the oral rinses. I use to brush immediately after each meal (and snacks) and rinse at night. I almost never missed a brushing. I even brushed just to make my mouth fresh again. So, I was being obsessive since I had problems with cavities as a kid. Yet, when I was obsessively brushing, I don't recall getting the black lines. That occurred about five years afterwards. But, I do know that the black lines were gone after I quit obsessively brushing. Heck...I wish I knew exactly why my black lines went away since those darned lines really kept me from smiling and I would love to help those who continue to suffer with the black line.

I have this " Black line stain " problem for over three years now and it brothers me alot because i have to go to dentist every three months to remove it . Until one time , i meet a new dental hygiene and she recommend me a tooth paste name " Crest 3D white remove 80% stain" .

This got to be the best advise i have so far, it won't permanently remove the stains but it helps me delay my hygiense appoiments to 5 months . ( Personal advise is to use the new paste right after the dental cleaning to get the best result)

it works for me and i hope it work for you guys too . we all want our smile back !

Both my sons currently have this. No one seems to know what it is, dentists included. It is only slightly comforting to know my boys are not the only ones!

I'm female 14 from NYC and I have black stains too on my teeth since 7 or 8 can it really cure my teeth using antibiotics augmentin??the dentist I have visited said nothing to cure and advise me to visit her once or twice a year pls help!!!

hi,
I found same problem on my kids’ tooth. The color of the stain is greyish and we got this after we changed our diet following Weston Price. I suspect the raw milk and kefir are the main cause for the coming of this bacteria on the tooth. We are also wondering wether this bacteria is harmful for the development of the teeth or not especially when it turns to the permanent one.
I do hope to get updated information about the same issues that you are facing. I would appreciate if you could share any development in fighting this bacteria.

Hi Rose, I came to know about your teeth, sorry about that. I’m relieved to hear that you are currently under dental treatment. I think you should control your diet a little bit and void the consumption of irony food. My sibling also has a stain on her teeth due to the presence of Chromogenic Bacteria. She is under treatment since 3 months in a well known dental clini. Now she is completely alright. Hope you get well soon

My son also had chromogenic bacteria on his teeth for several years and we had to go to the dentist 2-3 times a year to remove it. We relocated to the other country a year ago and our new dentist said that this black staining was due to excessive sugar intake. It is when your stomack cannot digest the amount of sugar you take. Clean your teeth professionally and then try to eliminate coke, fanta and other fizzy drinks, sweets, biscuits, chocolate, etc. from your diet and see what happens. We also invested into the electric tooth brush as they do a much better job comparing to normal ones. That worked for my son. He now has no black staining. P.S. Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium) did not help him.

My older son developed this problem in his teens. He is 28 now. The problem was SO embarrassing for him that, like the gentleman in Tucson, he would brush and brush and brush. All the brushing did nothing at all. At times, it seemed to make things worse. We asked dentist after dentist. None of them knew what to say so they fell back on an explanation of proper brushing technique and offered nothing more. We have looked at the current research on the matter because my young daughter now seems to be developing the very same problem. She is only 9 yrs old. It breaks my heart to think about how this will affect her. People see a be-spotted smile and make automatic assumptions about dental hygiene without a second thought. It's heartbreaking to watch someone you love go thru that. My husband works in the health sciences at the research level. Even at 2015 all that we can find are probable causes with no hope for solution. If anyone out there finds anything that works for them... please, please please share it with the rest of us. And for those that are suffering (and it genuinely is an awful thing to live with.... suffering the shame of other people's unhappy assumptions.) try to understand that the well meaning individuals who fall back on the "brush your teeth better" line.. they don't mean it. They just don't live this circumstance nor do they know someone who does.

4 of my children also have the blackish/grayish staining that develops on their teeth. My kids get fermented foods/probiotics pretty much daily, and we are diligent in brushing and flossing. We can't figure out why they get it, since we are so careful with their diets and diligent in pushing the pribiotics and kefir.
