A boy age 22 months and a girl age 11 months were found severely malnourished and near death last month when social workers took them to a hospital. Their parents, obsessed with the Internet and video games, left their babies suffering different health problems.

Michael (25) and Iana (23) Straw pleaded guilty to two counts each of child neglect. They are facing a maximum 12-year prison sentence each.
The couple was so distracted by online video games that they failed to give their children proper care. Although they had food, they had no time to feed the children as they were too busy playing video games.

The little girl’s head had to be shaven in the hospital as her hair was matted with cat urine. She also suffered a mouth infection, dry skin and severe dehydration. The boy was treated for starvation and a genital infection. There was lack of muscle development that caused him difficulty in walking.

The father, Michael Straw is an unemployed cashier, and Iana worked for a temporary staffing agency doing warehouse work. He got a $50,000 inheritance that they spent on computer equipment and a large plasma television.

Child neglect due to video games addiction is still rare but the spokesman for Nevada Child Abuse Prevention said it was just "a new spin on an old problem" referring to a drug addiction and child neglect.

American Medical Association didn’t designate video game addiction as a mental disorder yet because there was not enough evidence and because the subject needs to be studied more.
