Surgical clips can cause ALOT of pain~ My dad had back surgery close to 40 yrs ago, he has had pain ever since. He finally had a MRI & low & behold the  doc who did the surgery left clips in 24 clips ; that is why his legs do to sleep & so MUCH back pain...On a another note;

I too had a CT & discoverd clips left in after my surgery in 2010. I was having pain & tenderness over the incision site, when I complainted so much my doc finally sent me for a CT: & guess what there were the clips pinching a nerve in my lower abdomen. I have since filed a claim on this doc. He kept telling me that the "stiches" still need to heal; I HAD no stiches, they were clips.

I had 6X bypass surgery 15 years ago and you should see the stuff inside me.

The first time a I had a chest x-ray after the surgery the x-ray tech asked me if I had ever seen what it looked like in there. I said no and she showed me. Ha,ha, it looks like a 5 year old had his first experience with a paper stapler in there. Besides the wires they laced my chest up with which look like boot laces, there are staples all over my insides.

WOW this is very interesting I had my Gallbladder removed (laparoscopic) in 11/06 and have been to many doctors complaining of right upper quadrant pain I have had 2 Upper & lower GI's, numerous abdomen ultrasounds, barium enema with air, hip x-rays, & went to the extreme and paid $1500.00 for a full body scan & none of the Doctors disclosed to me that surgical clips had been left in me WHY?????? I discovered this myself by requesting copies of all my x-ray reports and was blown away to see on most of the reports that it was noted that I had surgical clips in the upper right quadrant from the surgery. If this is not the cause of the pain WHY have so many doctors neglected to tell me they were there. I have been told on two occasions that my liver was enlarged as well and have read this elsewhere from another person in the same situation I am in pain as we speak and am without medical coverage any suggestions? It was advised that I contact the doctor who did the surgery. I would say at this point the doctors are in denial or afraid of admitting this is the cause of the pain.

WOW is right. I too just found out I have surgical clips left behind from a laprascopic gallbladder removal, and have that "mysterious upper right quad pain" that no one [ Dr.] can seem to figure out. The office nurse finally mentioned it [ after numerous scans and years of complaints, the procedure was done about five years ago ]

This was NEVER mentioned as a possibilty [ actually, never mentioned at all ]  I just keep getting "I don't know" answers. Why?

Why does the med profession pass this over? Even if it is only a small percentage of us that have a reaction, why is that not presented as a possibility?

Certainly the clamps have done their job, so why can't they be removed laparascopically now? I'm not a kid, but would go through this in hopes it would relieve that right quad pain. If it didn't, at least Ive exhausted the options.

I'm sorry you are without med coverage, but my opinion is even if you had it, the doctors will still look at you like your crazy.

Good luck

I too have staples in my neck from a year ago and now they are causing tissue problems because your body does not take to objects that dont belong there,it is your doctors responsiblity to tell you that is bull what that pathologist said ,he is one of them. Go talk to a lawyer and find out your rights, because they are hurting my health. If you have a thyroid doctor talk to them ,because they can run blood test to see if your thyroid has any changes because of the clips,I am tires of id**t doctors who dont take responsibility for what they do wrong, would they do that to one of there family members,no.

Surgical clips are completely normal and are used (and left in) in many, many types of surgeries. They are made of titanium which is hypoallergenic, non-rusting, doesn't set off metal detectors, and isn't affected by an MRI machine. They are left in to keep blood vessels and various ducts closed after organ removal because otherwise you would bleed out. There are lots of reasons you may have pain in or around a previous surgical site, but the clips are not likely the cause. The reason you may not have been informed or they may not have been put in your record is because they are so completely standard that it would be like informing you of exactly what brand of alcohol swab was used to clean an injection site.

what a load of rubbish foriegn body and the pain caused like full body immune attack

i have titanium staples that are ruining my life and the docs won't take them out.am disabled from them,,

Dear, Medical person with no responsibility. Shouldn't clips be used to assist in repairs, Like any tool out there? Would you like it if your beautiful new office under construction had clamps left on the wood doors or nails sticking out of those beautiful desks? I think any "surgeon" who keeps tools inside a human body is a cheater and never finishes the job and still gets paid! Who's passing your medical inspection? We are all suffering from lazy undereducated, money chasing child like grown ups.

Maybe they can take out the clips and the wires they used to put me back together now that the healing is complete but I don't really want to have another operation to do that.

The wires do pull when there is a storm coming and they pull after I've been lying on my side working under my Jeep for a half hour. As my rib cage reshapes itself when I stand up I can certainly feel them.

But they look funny on an x-ray and they make a great conversation piece, so I'll keep them.

My husband had brain surgery on 6 Dec 2011, on the implant report it only says 8 titanium screw and 2 titanium plates were left in his brain. He has had severe siezures, excessive saliva production so bad he fills a 20oz bottle in 15 minutes, SEVERE migraines and hallucinations. He had a CT Scan 3 days ago that discovered a clip between his skull and brain in the dura pushing against his brain and 2 on the outside of the skull. This made it so he could not get his scheduled MRI. The surgeon told the imaging place she didnt know what the clips were and wouldnt send the surgical report. Then his radiologist said NOT to do the MRI because they didnt know what was in his head. When I got the implant and surgical report every tool and instument and plates and screws are mentioned, even the gel and sanitation liquids used. But NOTHING about clips. We are seeing a lawyer on monday, hes 100% worse after the surgery than he was before, this surgeon has probably caused permanent damage. Thought we were alone too!!!!

Hi i had two thyroid surgeries one in 2009 and one and 2010. I had thyroid cancer so had to have the whole thing removed. I still have trouble swallowing. But i don't have that much pain sometimes it can be a little sensitive were my scar is. I just had a skull and neck x-rays done for headaches i am having. ANd in the x-ray it shows i have numerous surgical clips i knew nothing about either. I was not informed or told about these at all. I am a little nervous and scared now after finding this out and hopefully it does not cause any problems.

metal clips are used to clamp down on vessels, ie bleeding, etc. Also the are used as markers for radiological readings by the doctors etc. etc.. And the best reasons surgical clips are used that they are quick and easy and not as tedious as the stitching would be. Me no doctor, but stay away from MRI, keep neck warm, and forget about them.

I had a clip at age 6. The more at age 12. found out MRI at age 45.

I had excision 10 years ago for endometriosis, a few years later Pain in my right side began to increase as I aged to the point where I now do not sleep throughout the whole night. it radiates from deep in my right side around to my lower back.  I have had this for some years now.  My doctor sent me for xrays due to the pain in my lower back which radiated from the right side and after much nagging from me he got me in for a scan also .   And yes there on my right side were three surgical clips left in.  In the exact area I have been having horrific pain.  I have not slept through a single night since this pain increased.  Yes the doctor said the same thing.. nothing can be done about the clips and no the clips are not causing the pain ... How the heck would they know this when he said there is no reason he can see for this pain,  yet here are surgical clips in the exact area of the pain ... whose kidding who here.   No they will not take out the clips.  I also was not informed that they would  be leaving clips inside my body after the operation ... level of pain compared to my endo is worse by far ... I am going to continue to investigate this,  as we all know what is referred to as normal today is by far not normal years later after proof has been found.  IE  doctors in history swore black and blue that women were not dying because they simply would not wash their hands before delivering a baby... how many women died due to this ignorance.  Even when they were proven wrong they still continued to kill women in birth because they would not let go of their egos and admit they did not know everything about doctoring ....

would love to know your doctors reaction to my post. Let me know if the answer goes something like this ... Well we have not had complaints from the thousands of people whom have had surgical clips left in them after operations done throughout the years ... I would suggest to your doctor if this is indeed his/her comment that maybe like myself many people just put up with the pain due to our ignorance and not connecting the two issues.. oh and last but by no means least NOT BEEN TOLD BEFORE THE OPERATION THAT WE WOULD HAVE CLIPS LEFT IN OUR BODIES believing that doctors would not lie to us ... So after many years of sleepless nights I have decided to take matters into my own hands to find out once and for all do these clips indeed cause major problems further on down the road after having an operation to fix a health problem. My clips I have been told are stainless steel thanks goodl luck

Please !!!! a surgical clip and a swab are two totally different items one is metal and left inside the body, the other is cloth and used outside the body then thrown away ... Your totally off track re- them being anything alike ... leaving a piece of metal inside a finely tuned machine think about this very long and hard ... in some people whom are sensitive this is going to cause alot of problems .. and to think that one does not have to infrom one that they are going to put a peice of metal into their body totally shocked the heck out of me .. FIRST DO NO HARM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
