Thank you for your answer. Like the others, I had my thyroid removed and found out later that they had left 4 staples in. Originally I thought they were for the parathyroid, but after reading your post it makes more sense for the blood vessels. That said, I came looking for an answer because mine seem to have disappeared four years later. I do have high levels of pain, but know this is from Lyme disease...what I did have for a while (until they treated it) was very high levels of aluminum which we haven't been able to figure out from where (i don't use anything with it). Was just wondering, and maybe you'd be so kind as to offer your thoughts, is it possible to break down the titanium clips? Is it possible that they used aluminum? And where in the world could they have gone??? Thanks :)

No...to your question, and yes possibly to the bigger question. In Graves and Hashi's the body is making antibodies to thyroid tissue (not metals). However, no one "officially" knows the cause of autoimmune in general. Most think it starts with some kind of infection, bacterial, fungal, viral, etc...but goes on low-grade so long that the immune system becomes dysregulated. That said, NO ONE treats the underlying infection and instead give immune supressants. Foreign objects in the body can cause an immune response...but the first immune responses would be to the material. Titanium levels as well as titanium antibody levels would be in order to prove it. Also tests for inflammation like CRP and SED Rate. You may also want an ANA/FANA.

It means that you are making antibodies to (and attacking) the enzyme that processes iodine...thyroid peroxidase...and makes iodine into something the body can use (I hope that you are NOT taking iodine).

To file a claim, in most states, you have to have another doctor that is willing to testify that what the other doctor did was wrong. You also have to prove that this IS, beyond doubt, what is causing the problem. My guess is that you would at the very least need high/positive Titanium Antibody tests...or need to show that infection (like puss and tissue breakdown around the staples) are there. You would also need a stack of studies showing that it can cause the problem you have. You should also make your requests for them removed in writting and get written responses saying that they won't remove. You will likely also need hosts of tests showing that absolutely nothing else could be causing your pain...since that is the defense that they will raise. Hope that helps.

I think titanium is safe...and you tell them when you get it, they will tell you.

I am also experiencing upper right abdominal pain that spreads to my back.  takes my breath away. I had my gallbladder removed 22 years ago.  my doctor sent me for a cat scan and I was told the surgical clips have come undone and one has lodged into my fat, and the other has moved behind my liver, also have calcifcations forming along my liver and colon.  I am now awaiting a surgical consult.  I hurt everyday.

I had surgery today for a diagnostic camera to why I was having so much pelvic pain in the 3 years. And my Doctor said it was digging into my bladder and bowels. And causing all my pain and now I may have to have bladder and bowel surgery because of them. So my OB doctor agrees that they cause pain

OMG...I also have the exact same symptoms, even the enlarged liver. I had my g/b removed in 08 and the pain started really bad in 2010. I also have had many x-rays, c-scans, digestive work, ent, breast doctor and no one told me of these clips. I am suffering from the exact same pain and just went to the ER on 4/14/14 and discovered on my own that I have these clips. My pain is so severe and no one believes me. Now I have gerd, kidney stones and liver problems. I am so sorry that others are experiencing this pain, but I am so glad that I know now it is not just me. Positive energy and thoughts being sent.

Exactly
what happened to me! My neck hurts all the time! My Chiro found the clips as well...about 30 or so. No one told me I was going to have pain from these things the rest of my life! My Dr said, it is routine and they cannot be removed. I am livid that I was never told nor warned that this could be a side effect of the surgery.

Intriguing post. Thank you for a well thought out response. However I have two sources of contention. The first being that even though it is now considered standard to do this it is somewhat absurd to consider the leaving of pieces of metal or any foreign object inside of the organic structures of the body as being the same as mentioning alcohol swab brands. A child could see this logic. The second objection is that even if it is considered standard practice that is something that should be, at all times told clearly to the patient. This is in the end that individuals life and body and they are entitled to this information just as every person should be entitled to the entirety of their own medical records. My last thought is why on earth do they not just remove the clips (depending on the surgery) such as in the case of gall bladder removal and simply sew the artery and ducts shut and let them heal without metal clips? We've been sewing up even major arteries such as a damaged aorta and multiple other structures for decades. This makes no sense to me.
