Hi, my mom is suffering from cystic fibrosis of her lungs. When she last time visited her doctor he prescribed her some immunosuppressive medications in order to prevent infection with pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was very confusing for me as I know that immunosuppressive medications lower someone's immunity and it is not good for defending against bacterial infection.

Everything you have said is correct but cystic fibrosis is disorder which has autoimmune mechanism. It means that our immune system recognizes cells of our body as enemy cells. It will lead to destroying mucosa on air ways in the lungs which will provide great conditions for pseudomonas to live there. Therefore your doctor decided to lower your immunity respond and prolong life of your lung's mucosa.
