All of you are incorrect, to an extent...even those of you who claim the amount of oxycodone in generic is allowed to be up to 20% off from the name brand manufacturer. I have in my hands, my latest prescription for "Endocet" 10/325. They DO in fact differ from "Percocet" not only in strength of pain relief, but also in PRICE. You will make a grave mistake if you have you Dr. write either "medically necessary" or " name brand only" on your scrip, because the cost per pill for brand name Percocet without the best insurance available, which I guarantee the vast majority of you do not have, is roughly $6.00 per pill. If you are fortunate enough to have very very good insurance, you will pay 50% of the "cash" price for the script....that is just simply the way these pharmacies work. So, on an order of 120 count 10/325 that your Dr. has written the above words, you will have a minimum charge of roughly $360.00, which is 50% of the cash price because Percocet is NOT considered a "preferred" drug....whereas several hundred other drugs are considered "preferred" and you would simply pay the $30.00 for the "name brand". Trust me, crappy experience once you get to the pharmacy and find this out. Even worse is the fact that now, unless you find a wonderfully understanding pharmacist and they are willing to actually "bend" the law...your script is WORTHLESS. The pharmacist HAS to fill it as it is written. So-on to the generic strength vs. the name brand. My bottle of Endocet, which by the way is DIRECTLY from the manufacturer, clearly states the ingredients...read and weep=Each tablet contains Oxycodone/Hydrochloride, USP.....10mg* and Acetaminophen, USP.....325mg. Notice the "*" next to the Oxy dosage. Follow the bottle down to the very bottom and in VERY fine print, the * represents something else-Quote"*10mg oxycodone HCI is equivalent to 8.9637 mg of oxycodone. Bottom line, PERCOCET is a full 10mg of oxycodone. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

Hey all!
I recently was given a prescription for percocet after a sprained my anke up really bad. At the pharmacy they substituted it for endocet since they have the exact same ingredients. The dose the doctor had given me is 2 (each containing 5mg oxycodone and 325mg acetaminophen) every 6 hours. I only take 1 because I find them to be very effective and take only 2 before I have to walk or be on my feet. I find although he ha prescribed me 12 a day that I am taking only about 6 a day. If I were to take the 24 you suggest I would be so messed up I couldn't move. 1 or 2 is plenty to slow my thinking down! And I do agree with the other posts. It is very dangerous to your liver to take more than 4 grams of acetaminophen (which is 12 pills) in a 24 hour period. It causes liver damage especially if you take alcohol or another drug that is metabolized in your liver. I was only given a prescription of 40 with no refills and I'll ed up throwing some out when my ankle heals there is no way I can take them all. Did you know it is illegal in Canada for your doctor to prescribe it with refills or to call it into the pharmacy; only written prescriptions are taken! It is a scheduled class 1 controlled substance! Be careful what you are doing to yourself.

Best of luck and I wish you health and pain free happiness!

I just wanted everyone who is harping on the people that are taking high doses or pain killers to realize that once your body builds up a tolerance to a medication the effects of that medication wear off thus making the medicine not as effective. So while some of you feel that "high" or the negative side effects when you first start taking an Endocet or Percocet after years of taking them for pain management your body does not have the same reaction. I know someone who has been on M-Elson (Morphine) and Endocets for 10 yrs due to a sever accident. He suffers from cluster headaches which are also known as suicide headaches because of the excrutiating amount of pain. There is no cure for these, he lives in pain every single day and goes to work and works hard. He has breakthrough pain and a severe episode a couple of times a week. In the past he has taken up to 20 endocets a day for the pain, he had addiction and currently he is no doubt physically dependant on the morphine and the endocets. If he runs out of medication I see the immediate signs of withdrawals and it's horrible. He doesn't like being on them and has tried to reduce his dose. His Doctor advised against it and said he should increase his dose!! He is managing on a lower dose and frequency even though I know he is just dealing with the pain in his own way. I hope one day there is something that can be done so he doesn't have to take the pills for the rest of his life. But for those people that are prescribed it as a one off for a surgery or for a short period of time the effects will be quite different than ppl who have been taking them for a long time.

I find this discussion quite interesting. I believe there is a big difference between the real Percocet and Endocet. I've taken both for back pain and the endocet gives me much more of a buzz than the percocets. I can see how this drug can be abused for the high. I'm glad I'm only given a small script a month for when I tweak my back and can't make it to the doctor.
This Christmas I fractured a tooth and suffered thru some very pain. I found a dentist / clinic that was open on new years eve and he messed me up even more. The next day i was swollen like a chipmonk and didn't sleep for many days. I was given Vicodin (plus penicillin) and that didn't work at all. I had a small script of endocet and they helped a little. Got a script of 30mg oxycodine. I was popping one of these or the endocets and they did almost nothing for the pain and any "High" I ever felt using half a endocet I was taking for the back pain was non-existent taking triple that amount. They swelling was so bad they couldn't pull the tooth or do a root canal so I just had to suck it up till the swelling went down.
I feel your pain for those that suffer from serious pain. There is no high involved when in that much pain. I went the the dentist 8 times and suffered thru 14 days of hell. I couldn't believe I could take such a high dose without feeling crazy high but I didn't feel high at all and it only made the pain bearable. That meant sleeping for an hour at a time at the most.
Just my $.02.

I feel for those of you that have pain that is just unbearable. It is no joke and the minor back pain I suffer from I will just live with. Heard too many horror stories of people who went under the knife and are now worse.

If you were taking that many endocets, you would be dead. Must be taking some placebos in there because your liver would explode.

I, too, have persistent pain b/c of numerous injuries to my face, neck and spine. I would suggest you ask your dr about switching to pure oxy

secondly, seek help in the US! I lived in CA for 5-years and learned that socialized medicine is not the way to go!

I have the best back surgeon at Fairfax Hospital (head of ortho surgery), Dr. Ronald Childs. I could almost guarantee you that HE would be able to do surgery for you and get you back into action!

Try this for a week and see if it helps (replacing the narcotic meds). We (dental office) say "no more than 5 days" so you can imagine the concern if you are on the pain meds long term. Of course your pain is chronic and I think surgery is the answer (works for me... I've never heard of inoperable back.... )

Alternate 400 mg ibuprofen and 400 mg acetaminophen at a minimum of two hour intervals. Do not exceed five days.

Do NOT drink alcohol or use other products containing acetaminophen.
Take medication with food.

I hope the best for you and i'm so sorry for the pain you have.

TO Rowdie40:

I find it hard to believe a doctor would be so grossly negligent to prescribe you a dangerous amount of Oxycodone/APAP.

I'm assuming they are 10/325 pills. Do the math: 12*325=3900mg, just below the FDA allowed upper limit of daily APAP consumption of 4g. In a person with normal liver function, these amounts should not be dangerous but will contribute to reduced liver function in the long term. In my non-medical opinion, your Doc should switch part of your dose over to Roxicodone (Oxycodone instant release) or similar to keep your APAP consumption below 2g/day.

If you are getting multiple scripts, that's a different story, and your fate is in your own hands.

HAHAHA you say your not addicted to them.... I beg to differ. Those headaches you get when you lower your doses is withdraws.

I take 15 pills a day. I am prescribed to take 12. Any more than that and your doctor can lose his license. Spoken from the mouth of my Dr. I have very dark urine, it's hard for me to urinate though I have the urge constantly. Last year I lost A LOT of weight, and though I live off junk food and cake, I cannot gain weight and people assume I have an eating disorder, which I do not.. If anything I shouldn't eat so damn much! It's really unreal how much c**p I can put in my size 0 body. I am worried I have liver damage also causing kidney failure. Maybe even diabetes. This comes as a paranoia maybe, but does anyone know HOW MUCH more than 12/day and for HOW LONG (been on them 3 yrs...(over 12/day for almost 10 months) before your liver has been affected in a dangerous way? Can you fix your liver problems should I find I have some or am I doomed? I am having liver testing done tomorrow and I am worried; hoping for some sleep tonight and info from one of you would maybe help calm me down.
No, I do not get the high I used to, and yes I most certainly do have a physical dependence, and I am not going to deny that I am addicted to feeling good without pain and enjoy the euphoria that comes with each dose for a few minutes. There first step is to admit you have a problem and denile to people you don't even know is the least of your worries.. If I have liver damage, I will be back to report, and you 20+a day users will sure as sh*t have something to worry about too. I know I need pain medication to live a normal life with lower back pain, but I also know that the risks at this point out way the benefit, and only recently have I come to terms with this. It's time to get off. I am suppose to go from 15 (12) to 10 for 3 days then to 8 for 10 days. I don't know if I am strong enough to do it. Is there something else they can give me to get me off this and counteract the horrible withdrawal? I have 2 small children, and though I can't afford not too, I also can't afford being down for a couple weeks while my children miss out on mommy time because mommy is too sick. I hate that I was ever given these drugs, prior to my CT SCANS or MRI's.. though it did turn out I needed surgery. WHat I am saying is that dr's definitely do give the narcotics out a little too easily and though I had some pain relief, at what cost to me now? If any of you know what my symptoms mean because you can relate, (not give me your bitchy opinion, it would be very appreciated.. also if you can tell me how you or someone you know avoided the withdrawal and got off this deathtrap drug, I would forever be thankful! Try not to lie to yourself people..

endocet and percocet are the same drug. there are different manufacturers. they are both the same amt of oxycodone and acetametaphin.people have different pain ratios so you may get a buzz as some put it off of 2.5mg and some may not get a buzz at all even if took 30mg. people metabolize different. weight plays a part in it too at times. heck if you don't even take tylenol prn start out with half tabs to see how they affect you first. depending on ones diagnosis you could be prescribed 60mg oxycodone every 4 hours. people are to judgemental. you never know until your in someone elses shoes. i learned first hand. i am a nurse and I was definely the judgemental one. I was taught in nursing school pain is what your patient says it is, everyone has different tolerances, monitor for signs of. well I did and if I thought you were wanting to cop a buzz I'd take my time getting it, ect. I didn't practice what I was taught. well carma's a b***h, boy did I get mine. we had a code and I needed a pump stat went to get it fell down stairs, messed up my back and left leg. I learned the hard way.you don't know what someone else is feeling if your not in their skin. point is you build tolerance if taking med over long periods and to get relief you increase dose. in this day and age NO ONE should have to suffer. you can take large doses for long periods and not have addiction. it's called physical dependence. you will hurt more at times when coming off. LIKE MOST MEDS TAPER OFF DOSAGE. YOU DO NOT STOP ABRUPTLY . also, if taking a long time and not working after increasing dose may need to change med. Methadone is awesome drug. long acting, effective. not just for addiction withdrawals and heck you can say your an addict and go to a clinic and get it legally.

I know what you mean, I just got some a few days ago, take percocet or norco 10s for my back. Been taking norcos (hydrocodone 10mg) for roughly 5 years. My wife and I both take them. But we have found that different manufactuers pills may have the same ingredients but somehow you feel different from them For example perc is mostly made by Watson, so is norco. I feel more from pills from watson I dont know why and I know for a fact that this is not in my mind or a placebo, reason is, that my wife purchases them, I dont even look at the bottle, till an hour later I feel jack. Several friends have said the same thing. For some reason watson kicks in better. This one guy I know, takes everything under the sun, just abuses pills, anything he can. He said Watson just makes them better. Guess its like You rather buy Motrin or Advil then Ibprofen. Now I havent, even after 5+ years (im 29) of taking norcos, percocet and dilauid or however u spell it, I havent got a tolerance for them. Cause I always limit myself. I do know sometimes I have severe sciatca and nothing at all helps that. Also for some reason the first time I took a dilaudid the drs said thats the strongest thing there is. 8mg tabs are the strongest there are, I barely feel a 4mg pill. Hell, I usually take 6mg at once just to feel it. But I can take one 10mg hydro (norco from watson) and it just whoops my butt. But my wife might have to take 8 norco a day and i only take 3 lol. Im also a big guy im hitting 240 ish so is she. But when she takes dilaudid she takes half what i do and shes flat out. Her doctor, she has many of them, cause lupus, plus herniated discs and degenerative discs. Her leg is swolled up like a python just swalloed a giant rabbit. But shes tough as hell. She actually asked the doctor to cut her leg off cause its been messed up for 10 years. Its like diabetic sores, shes probably seen over 10 doctors in the last few years and they cant figure it out cause shes not diabetic, her blood pressure is normal. Just one of those things. But she continues to press on being 10 times as strong as me lol. But anyways her main doctor told her its just different receptors, and when you take an opiate, dopamine and endorphins are released. I guess different ppl respond to different things. See I thought all opiates have the same receptors but he said hydromorphone (dilauid) is diff then hydrocodone to your body. Which is obvious to me cause I take a norco and im jacked up for hours whereas, 6mg of dilauid i barely feel. I believe 8mg of dilauid or however is roughly the same as 28mg of hydrocodone. Also we have tried everything we can to make the pills stronger so we wont take as much. I hate taking these things, but hell I cant move without it, and acid reducers seem to work, I hear tagamet helps alot, cause less acid to destroy the pills. Also taking them on an empty stomach but eat something sweet bout 20 minutes before chocolate helps alot, u feel it big time. Prob cause the serotonin and insulin jump it gives you. And eat something light about 20 minutes AFTER you take the pills. Good luck to all of yall with your problems. I feel your pain. Literally. ~texas~

I have interstitial cystitis a particularly brutal and painful condition. I take several pain meds but on a rotating basis to help keep tolerance from getting to bad. I'll take 7-10 vicoprofen a day which is 7.5 hydrocodone and 200 ibuprofen for several months then switch to 6-8 percocet 10/325 a day for several months. When I switch from one to the other there is greater pain relief for about a month.

I have had both the percocet brand and generics as well as endocet brand and there is really no difference. The endocet seems to start working just a little faster I suspect only because it is a softer tablet so therefore dissolves faster.

As for the other debate here of whether a pain patient can take 5,10,15 percs a day and not be high well that is true. Before I got sick I on rare occasion would take a 5mg vicodin left over from dentist visit or something and would get nice fuzzy buzz. Since I've been sick and in desperate pain I have yet to feel that nice fuzzy buzz all I feel is relief from the horrendous pain that makes me wish I were dead all to often.

I was a know it all ass about the subject of someone having to take a lot of pain pills till I needed them myself just to function and just to not want to die.

WOW!!!!!! i have read most of the posts on this site and a few others and cant believe what i am reading. about 7 years ago i was hit hard on the drivers side. i thought i was fine until a few months later. then i started having the worst pain and muscle knotts under my shoulder blade. went to the local E.R. and was given a e-ray and was told that nothing was wrong with me. 4 years later i was still in horrible pain and was being told that nothing was wrong. they kept giving me muscle relaxants and told that a M.R.I wasnt needed. i finely just walked into a orthopedic specialist and begged for her help. well after the M.R.I test she found out that i had 3 ruptured discs < c4, c5, and c6/7> when i asked her why nobody else caught this she said that because of pain pill abuse doctors are frightened to write pain medications. well i just had discs replaced 2 weeks ago. a very painful surgery but i gained the use of my right arm < it had got so bad because of the waiting, i lost 50% of the use in my right arm> however, my doctor sent me home with vicodine E.S 2 every 8 hrs. they worked fine, however i was taking 2 every 5 hrs. when i called to have my doctor refill the scrip. i was told that i was calling them in to early and that the doctor wouldnt write a new prescription. and basically he now was concerned about me being addicted and i would have to suffer in pain until my scrip was ready. once again this 2 weeks out of surgery!!!!!! when i made a fuss and demanded to talk to the doctor he told me that his hands where tied and that if he rewrote the prescription the law would come to his office and investigate. so i told just to forget it, and I am taking ibuprofen.
what really angers me is that i have been in soo much pain, and still am. but i cant get a doctor to write me anything in fear being targeted as a "pill pusher" . then i read this bulls@#t about how some of are you taking 20 percs a day plus morphine, and i just dont understand how this is possible. i am 2 weeks out of a major surgery and am taking over the counter meds. then there are some of you out there taking all these meds without knowing what is even wrong with you!!!
because of all the pill heads and pill pushers, doctors are frighten to death to write pain meds. thus those of us who really are in pain, and are not addicts have to suffer in pain.
somebody explain to me how this is right!!! the only thing i can say is that while i might be in pain now. i will be fine very soon and not have to deal with this pain pill c**p anymore.
