I'm 21 and after an unexpected miscarriage (before I actually knew I was pregnant) I had the Paragard fitted. I find it an excellent form of birth control, apart from the HORRIBLE smell 'down there' during my period! I've been showering twice a day, changing my sanitary towel every hour and using odour-neutralising towels. This has helped a lot but it is still sometimes noticeable.

I know that I wasn't CRAZY. I had my paragard insertion 7 months now. For the first 3 weeks or so my discharge was OFF THE CHARTS! I hated it, but my doctor assured me that my body was just adjusting to having a "foreign object" inside and that it would eventually get back on track. Well she was correct...........to an extent because things did get back to normal, but I've notice in the last month the increase discharge has come back. Thankfully I do not have any foul odor and I sympathize with those of you who have to deal with a foul odor in addition to having a constant flow of discharge. Mine too is THICK and YELLOW. I feel DIRTY all the time. Before paragard I only had to use a panty liner near the end of my cycle, now if I don't wear one DAILY and change it MULTIPLE time throughout the day I'll go NUTS. My undies ALWAYS feel DIRTY. I don't want to sound gross or appear to be giving out too much info, but we are all ladies here and are experiencing the same dreadful issue so here goes. My discharge has become so bad, but unfortunately my spouse thought that my body was reacting in a "positive way" to his touch if you all know what I mean. In other words, he thought that my discharge was actually a result of arousal and excitement. Little does he know that my body is in a CONSTANT state of "wetness" so to speak. I hated telling him the real reason although he does know that I had the insertion. I don't know what has happen to make the increase of discharge reappear. I have had no recent illnesses, no vaginal infections, no stress, nothing to support this biological change. I don't want to get my paragard removed, but I don't know if living with this type of change is worth it.

I just got the ParaGard yesterday and I think I am already regretting it :( I've never had a child, never had cramps and so far I've had cramps since I had it inserted. I know it hasn't been long but it's already frieking me out that I have this thing inside of me. After reading all of these posts I just feel like I wasn't prepared to get it in the first place. I am at the end of my period and I have this foul smelling discharge along with light bleeding, it's uncomfortable. If I had read up more on it like I am NOW, I probably wouldn't have gotten it. Ugh... I am very conscious about smells down below and this does NOT make me even want to have sex. :( I want to patient but I'm just uncomfortable and after reading all this stuff am not looking forward to the future.

I just got the ParaGuard IUD placed in yesterday. when it was inserted i had cramping, and my doctor also told me that i would have spotting. It is now the 2nd day of having it, and the cramping and spotting have lightened.
I just turned 24 last month, and i recently had my third baby, on October 1st. i have not had my period yet.
I have heard horrible stories online about issues with this birth control. i have become concerned about the subject, and do not know about it anymore.
about the sex, i don't know if it is right to have sex already. my doctor told me that there is no problem having sex right away, but i just feel alittle weird. also because i still have spotting, even though its very light.
what would be your recommendations?

Hi everyone, I'm 21, never had any kids. I had the Paragard placed a few weeks ago. I was really scared about getting it because of some of the bad reviews. The insertion process was uncomfortable, but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I had it inserted on the 5th day of my period, and I had spotting that lasted for about a week after. I was also REALLY crampy for a few days after the insertion. The cramps went away after a few days and now I don't even notice that I have something inside me. My fiance can't feel the strings when we have sex either. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of so far is the increased discharge. Mine doesn't smell, luckily, but it is a nuisance. So far I'm really happy with my decision to get the Paragard. I hated taking the pill and putting all those extra hormones in my body. Maybe my opinion will change after having the Paragard for a longer period of time, but right now it's great!

I got my Paragard IUD 3 years ago. I have one son and was 20 when he was born, we knew we wanted more children in the future sense I have Lupus, we have to to plan for a pregnancy. So I decided on paragard seeing how its hormone free and my dr highly recommended it with the lupus. Getting the IUD inserted was extremely pain for about 1min then I had pretty bad cramp even down into the front of my legs. After the first day I really began to love the paragard and was great for the 1st year, but as time when on my menstrual cycles became heavier and more painful over the nexy 2 years. For the past yr I have had alot of clear discharge and was tested and was told everything was normal and that the discharge was just because of the IUD. For the past month I have began to have more discharge, still clear but now has a horrible smell. After showering I feel clean for a few hours then the smell begins to come back. Someday i am showering as often as 5 to 6 times a day just to feel clean. I HATE this. my dr is still telling me its normal, but its getting so bad i dont want to leave the house because i feel dirty. I have an appt my have my IUD removed Jan. 14th, we plan to become pregnant in the next few months anyway so getting out now seems to be the best thing for me. Lets hope this discharge and smell will go away and be gone forever, would not wish this upon anyone.

The problem that I am having is nothing like what any of you have described. I will be 25 in 8 days, I have 4 children one that passed away 2 years ago so am only getting to raise 3. My youngest will be 10 months tomorrow and I had the paraguard placed when she was around 8 weeks old i guess. I was having a massive discharge problem no smell or anything just normal clear discharge that was driving me crazy. Now I wish that was my problem, when she was 3 months old I started bleeding severely it finally stopped 2 weeks ago and I was thrilled. But it came back a couple days ago this time it is twice as bad with alot of clots. I think I am going to end up losing my mind here...

Hello everyone,
Well where do I start…I have had Paraguard since 2009 and recently (this past year) I have had nothing, but heavy and smelly discharge followed by reoccurring UTIs. I would say that I have had at least 20 UTIs in the past year. I just want to be really blunt because I think that details will help everyone out. I noticed that I get a lot of discharge right before my period and it really smells, plus it’s really annoying too. I have to a thin liner and even bundle up and place a little toilet paper (I know weird right?) just to absorb the discharge or else it gets everywhere. Also, when my hubby and I do it, the discharge gets all over the place and heavier when I “go.” Right afterwards, I pee and even take a shower and still get more discharge and eventually a UTI. I have been to the doctor like others and they have tested me for STDs and Bacterial Vaginitis, which both came back negative. However, my recent urine culture came out positive for bacteria “from” the vagina. I never had any of these issues and am seriously thinking about having it taken out. Even my General practitioner told me that he thought I should have it removed because it has been in there too long and he believed the IUD had something to do with the recurrent UTIs, but when I told my gyno he just laughed and said that they were not related. But what is a bacterium from the vagina doing in the uretha? I know they are close in proximity and sex can massage it in, but I never had these problems until recently when I noticed more discharge. I even eat yogurt and drink cranberry juice EVERYDAY with all meals. This problem has costed me so much money, time and discomfort and I am just sooo over this....Any ideas? I also noticed that noone posts anything about what happens when they removed it.....

Hello all! I am a 31 year old and have had Paraguard IUD for over a year now. I have no kids, and in a monagamous committed relationship. Overall, I LOVE it. I was on the pill for about 10 years, on and off, and decided it was time for me to be hormone-free (just due to being a nurse and seeing what blood clots can do to women, increased risk for breast cancer, etc). It was truly a painful experience for me to have inserted, but nothing unbearable, and I cramped severely for the next day or so, (nothing a good dose of Ibuprofen couldn't handle). The only changes I have noticed is that my periods are heavy for the first few days, and a bit longer maybe by a day or two, as compared to before when I was NOT on the pill. I have virtually no cramps, just light cramping a few days before my period, and my overall cycle is more "normal". I used to menstruate every 35 or 36 days, now it's usually exactly every 30 days. I do have more mucusy discharge about mid-cycle though, and that is probably my only complaint. Sometimes it's A LOT of mucus. I haven't noticed any foul smell though, and even though the mucus issue is gross to me, it has never been an issue during sex... it's possible that it's so thick that it just stays closer to my cervix during intercourse. Overall, I really do love having my IUD. It has given me the true freedom I'd like; no hormones, no babies, and no condoms. :)
Every woman is different, but I do want people to know that it works WELL a lot of the times, and often times internet searches will only give you the bad experiences... (women who have good experiences with the IUD are much less likely to write about it on the internet). Give it a try, and give it at least 4-5 months before you decide. I am very happy with it.

Hello to everyone!!! I am a 27 year mother of 2. My fiance and I have been debating on what birth control is better for me because we plan on having more children in the future. I got my ParaGard IUD 10 days ago . My period went completely off by the next day. A few days later, I was having the brown spotting as though my period was going off. Then, I noticed I had a very strong smelling odor. I figured it was from my period didn't go its complete cycle. I been a pantie liner for about a week now and the smell is so bad that I don't want my fiance going near me down there. It feels weird to have to push him away. I called the doctors and I'm paying them a visit tomorrow to see what is going on. My 4 year old has come in the bathroom and told me that I smell different and I kind of stink. It made me feel bad So I know that I have to get it taken care of if my child can smell me. My fiance wanted to have intercourse so i figured if I took a nice long hot shower and did a little extra washing and wiping down there it wouldn't be as bad. Right after sex I started smelling the smell again and I got right in the shower. He asked what was wrong and I told him i couldn't take the smell. Laughingly he say I thought you like the smell of our sex. I had to tell it wasn't the sex I was smelling and he gave me this weird look and shrugged his shoulders and said ok. I explained to him what it might be after looking it up online and he decided to go to the doctors wit me. It wasn't pain getting the Paragard IUD but its going to be a pain to have to go through this awful experience of the bad smell. I want to thank all of you ladies for expressing your experience it has helped me better understand what was going on with me and I'm sorry that we all had to experience this young and a little older its not very pleasing.
