Oh my goodness that sounds really serious and terrifying! If your doctor can't figure out what is wrong I think you should find another doctor!

I had exactly the same discomfort a couple years ago. All tests came back normal. I had it for several months, and one day it is just GONE!!! But...now ( about 2 years later) this discomfort is back....Honestly, I think it is just a trapped gas in our intestines.....Of course, I am NOT sure....but I think so....and it is horrible feeling.....just like a ball below the left side below of my rib cage...sometimes it feels like something moving in that area....I start to believe that it is a trapped gas in the upper part of the large intestine...

I have the same issues. Occasional pain in left back, upper shoulder blade. But most importantly, when laying on my stomach or on my left side I get a feeling of pressure/slight discomfort/pain under my bottom left rib.
X-ray was clear. Ultrasound was clear. Was told I have kidney stones on left side, but was told those are not the source of any pain yet.
Asked for CT scan, as my mind has decided I have a tumor and I'm going to die, but the docs dont want to expose me to radiation unless necessary since I'm in my early 30's.
Anyone get any results?

Anybody have any conclusions? I have had this on and off for a while. Seems to increase with stress, caffeine and dairy. Also I have had on and off heartburn. Would love to hear if any conclusive results from Dr visits/medical exams. Thx.

Diverticulitis can and does cause these symptoms. Antibiotics, liquid diet for a couple of days cures it.

I have had a long history with this. It came on pretty abruptly about 6-7 years ago. First I went to the doctor and they did a bunch of tests-- they were all normal. I think the doctor wanted to say that it had something to do with my digestive tract, but honestly the only way it is connected is the fact that when I eat a lot and my stomach is full, it presses against the place with the pain in my left side and makes it more painful. It doesn't actually seem to have anything to do with eating. It also gets bad when I have to sit for a long time, like when I'm driving. One weird aspect of the pain is that it feels worse when I am feeling sad or guilty about something. At times like this, the pain acts up and makes me feel really tired. It might be related to stress, but it isn't 1-to-1 related to stressful events.
After the first doctor couldn't find anything, I went to an acupuncturist. The acupuncturist decided that it was a problem with one of my nerves, and after a few weeks managed to get the pain to change from being a fist-sized, distributed pain under my ribs to a quarter-sized sharper pain right on top of my ribs (which was actually a HUGE improvement). For a while after that the pain went away almost completely (about 2 years), and then it came back. Since I had moved across the country, I went to a different acupuncturist, but she was worthless, and the hundreds of dollars that I paid her had no effect. Her approach did actually seem opposite that of my first acupuncturist-- the first one treated the spot directly and counseled cold compresses, while the second one treated mostly everything but the spot and counseled warm compresses and staying away from cold beverages. I went back to the doctor. This second doctor gave me a diagnosis based on several clues: first, she said that the fact that the acupuncture was able to help meant that it wasn't something in my digestion or having to do with my internal organs. It was probably musculo-skeletal. Second, I could rub the spot and that would make it feel a bit better (only post acupuncture, before acupuncture I couldn't bring myself to try to massage it because of how it felt--so deep). My doctor also said that if it had been something worse (like pancreatic cancer or something), it would have gotten much worse over the last 6-7 years, and it hasn't. She concluded that it was some muscle thing, and that I was holding stress in that spot. She said, "You know, I carry stress in my shoulders, for example..." and I was like, "Yeah, but that's normal... it doesn't seem normal to carry stress only in a quarter-sized spot on your left rib." Anyway, she told me to make an appointment with a physical therapist, which I haven't done yet. I did get a massage, though, and the masseuse went to town trying to fix it. He did a lot of good, but I think he was mostly fixing the contortions of my back that result from me constantly bending over and favoring that side of my body because of the pain. In any case, I'm going to make an appointment with the PT and the masseuse again and see what we can do. I'm guessing that we could all be suffering with a variety of different things depending on our exact symptoms, but maybe you'll find, as I have, that it is muscular, which is at least better than it being some terrible internal condition. I am a 33-year-old woman, and I have terrible posture, which might be part of it. I'll let you all know if the PT or massage helps at all.

I'm feeling these same symptoms (slight pain and discomfort in left upper abdomen under ribs) and the pain isn't great, it's actually subtle and I can kind of massage around the ribs in that area and get slit relief but as soon as I stop,I can feel the discomfort in that area, I haven't had any test done and now I'm afraid to waste the money, out of reading all 13 pages, I'm confident in the "hernia" and "holding gas" explainations, both could be he issue but both are very different issues from the other and that is scary. I really wish there was a way to directly see inside this area. Anyway I want to help so here are the measures I'm taking, increasing water intake, eating healthier foods, fish, veggies, etc, laying off carbonation (gas?) and excercise, good luck guys
