we have a ten year old son. he has always had a speech problem. Two years ago he was tested for the gifted program at school, last year his grades started dropping and now this year he is failing. We get complaints from his teacher all the time about him not paying attention and various other things. Even at home it gets frustrating with him. He seems to not have or not use common sence. Every sentence he says he starts with the word actually. He forgets everything, puts things in very silly places, example things that go in the ice box he will put in the dish cabinet. So we have been taking him to the dr. he has been on medication for add and now they are saying that he has touretts. which he does have tic with the head, arms, wrists and makes many noices over and over again, so i guess my question is i know that the tics and noises could be but does tourettes have those severe of mental problems on someone.

Have them check his medication. It could be the medication he is on that cause the tic and outburst. Esp. ADHD meds.

My daughter began having little tics when she was about 2. I never really noticed them much until she was in the 3rd grade and was then diagnosed with ADD. After medication, the tics became worse and she has full blown TS. It's not severe enough to require medication but it does affect her school work. She is a sophmore in high school and struggles but mainly with her math classes. She is your typical teenager and tries to hide her TS with funny jokes or just being loud so people don't notice her sudden outbreaks. I am grateful she has only a "minor" case.
