effect of antibiotics on menses

Did you ever find out if the Augmentin was to blame? I try to stay away from taking it since it is so harsh, but I had a horrible sinus infection and the doctor wanted me to take it. I am NEVER late, I am like clock-work, and I am three days late now after taking it for almost 2 weeks. I ave all the other symptoms though, and 3 negative pregnancy tests...

I need help and am freaking out! Last month (March) my period started on the 17th but also during that time I was taking Sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds tablets for an UTI for about a week. I was having my period and taking these antibiotics at the same time for about a week. Me and my boyfriend had protected sex on the 31st of march, but now I'm 2 days late. Can someone help me please?

I took penicillin for two weeks and also had penicillin through an IV during my wisdom teeth extraction. I am 8 days late and I am usually very normal. I believe it's a side affect of the meds

I am definitely freaking out about having a late period... I just started a new relationship and we've been using the withdrawal method. I know it's not the best way to go, but I am 99% sure that he was very careful. In the past month, I've been on Augmentin for a double-ear infection, an ear-drop antibiotic, a round of prednisone because the antibiotics didn't clear up the infection, Biaxin for when the steroids were done and the infection came back, and now Flagyl because all of the nonsense prior to that gave me BV. I monitor my monthly cycle with an iPhone app and it's usually pretty accurate give or take a few days. I just wanted to say that reading these boards made me feel a lot more at ease because I'm stressing out about when I will get my period (It was supposed to come today and I've got no cramps, spotting, or anything...) I guess I'll give it a week and if nothing by then, I'll take a pregnancy test and make an appointment with the gyno.

Thank god. I was do worried I was pregnant! I've had sex but we did use a condom. The antibiotics were for an infection in the cavities of my skull so they were very strong. They caused bad cramps, cold sweating, constant nausea and diorhea that was painful (for an unknown reason :s) maybe the effects of the antibiotics is messing with our system and not the antibiotics themselves (why doctors wouldn't have told us) anyways thank you everyone ..I am more than releaved haha

I can definitely relate. I started taking amoxicillin for about a week then doxycycline for almost 2 weeks. I had a mirena for a month then had it removed then a month later had my period...but the month after (after antibiotics) im already 4 days late for my period. I take humira which made my periods change but it never made them super late. I can only assume that the antibiotics are to blame for possibly having a late or non existent period this month. I had sex last month but I have a negative preg test. All I have is faint cramping like a phantom period with no blood. Weird. Im going to see the doc sometime this week just in case. Seems like from what ive heard prolonged antibiotic use could be the culprit.

Hi! I took Co-amoxiclav Augmentin 3weeks ago. I'm regular and sexually active. We had sex regularly for three months and it's our 4th month now. We use the withdrawal method everytime we had sex and for three months, I didn't get pregnant at all. But after taking Augmentin for a throat infection, I am delayed for 6 days now. I'm freaking out because we're not planning to have a child anytime soon. (I'm freaking out because I'm thinking of a "what if pre-cum accident") But my bf was sure that it did'nt happen. I'm still waiting for my period to come. I'm stressing now, can't eat or sleep soundly because of the situation that I can be pregnant. But I know I'm not coz I'm experiencing PMS but no period at all.

I was prescribed Bactrim DS (800 mg) twice a day for two weeks.  I have two days left of pills to take.  I was supposed to get my period a week ago.  So far nothing.  I am on the birth control Yaz & have not missed any pills.  I also know that it only takes "one time," but I only had sex twice last month.  I am too scared to take a pregnancy test!  I keep feeling crampy, but everything I go to the bathroom - NOTHING! 

Thanks for putting my mind at ease girls! Was put on two rounds of antibiotics ( cipro and clarithromycin) just before my period was supposed to arrive. Being on birth control pills my periods have been fairly regular ( more so with timing than heavyness of flow) but now im two weeks late. After the first week of sugar pills my period did not arrive so i decided to wait and see if it would come in the next few days and held off starting my new pack of pills, another week later still nothing. Now i think ill start taking them again, hopefully put some 'regularity' in my homones again so i might get my period next month! Here's to hoping!!

After reading all these posts I am slightly relieved to know that others have experienced the same things I have. I also feel that it is rather important to leave my own story on this post. I was diagnosed with a sinus/double ear infection on 5/15/2013. I was prescribed Bactrim 800mg twice daily. Due to side side effects (dizziness and tingling in hands/feet/face) I stopped taking it after 6 days. Side effects left. Ear pain returned. Returned to my Dr on 5/29. I was prescribed Amoxicillin 875mg twice day for 14 days, started taking it on 5/30. My last period was from 5/9-5/13. Though I have had what felt like PMS, I have had NOTHING even close to a period since then. I am currently missing my 2nd period since all this began. My fiancé lives out of state and badly wants a child. I have sent him a link to this page hoping it will give him some of the same relief it gave to me. We have not had sex since the first week of April when he visited. I am not on birth control, though I was pretty sure I wasn't pregnant (protected sex outside of ovulation window), still took a pregnancy test. It was NEGATIVE as expected. Im still uneasy. Just want my body to normalized. All of this over a round of antibiotics??? It HAS to be the antibiotics. I haven't taken ANYTHING else...nothing more than the same multivitamin I've always taken. This is some kinda crazy....people need to be made aware of this. Very stressful.

Glad I found this thread! was getting very worried and now I feel so much better. 

I started taking Amoxicillan the day my period was supposed to start (i am very very regular). My period started but never progressed to it's regular flow. I only had light spotting that showed when wiping after urination. This has gone on for a week. Normally my period is about four days long with one heavy day and two or three light days.... not sure how long it will take for this period to be over at this rate but I'm happy to find out this is a common occurrence. 

Did your period arrive? It's been nearly two weeks after my due date but I was on a cours of flucoxacillin and was wondering if it was why as there is no other reason I could think of.

I was on Flucloxacillin for a week 3 weeks ago. My period is more than 2 weeks late. I have had my urine tested for infections but there are none. I have not done a pregnancy test yet mainly because I'm scared of finding out for sure. I have had the worst case scenario in my mind for several days but since reading this thread I do feel a bit relieved. My boyfriend and I always have had protected sex so chances of pregnancy are tiny.

I am the same, I have a non hormonal copper coil in, my period comes at the same time every 4th Tuesday... and then I took amoxicillin for 9 days and my period is late yet I am more bloated than ever! Definitely is a side effect

Hi, I am also a bit relieved to find this thread. I was prescribed Cephalexin for sinusitis and have been taking the medication for 3 days. My period is now approximately 6 days late. Of course, I have been wrought with worry and grief. I have experienced pms symptoms like bloating, cramps, fatigue, but no period. There is a very small chance that I may be pregnant. I am also under a great deal of stress and a missed period greatly adds to that level. I'll be taking a pregnancy test in 5 days (day 8 on antibiotics).
