I am interested in explanation of phrase ‘emotional detachment ‘as medical term. It’s not absolutely clear to me what it means. I heard that phrase was used in a discussion that I was listening to but didn’t take part in. I’d be grateful for few words of explanation. Thanks.

There are two different meanings of this phrase in psychology. One explanation is that it refers to someone’s inability to connect with other people on emotional level. It is also described as dissociation or emotional numbing. The second sense of emotional detachment is that it is a type of mental assertiveness. Emotional detachment sometimes arises from trauma, stress or anxiety disorder.

Hello there,
Since the poster above me has already explained you what emotional detachment means I don’t see why I should repeat her words? Instead of that I can share my experience with you. My best friend was suffering from anxiety disorder after car accident in which her husband died. Few years she was totally numb, she wasn’t crying but nor smiling. Only after hours and hours of therapy her doctor found a way to work on her emotional detachment.
Luckily, she is fine now, and she doesn’t experience any of the symptoms anymore, but that period of her life was disaster. I hope that you are just curious about this.
