I woke up after drinking quite a bit, ate some nacho chips (no salsa) and was sick in the morning. I vommitted about 5 times and noticed the uvula after the second time. I thought I had a piece of food stuck in the back of my throat. I went to the Dr. and he said that my Uvula was infected and put me on antibiotics for 10 days. It is day 2 and it is still swollen a bit but is still twice as long as normal. I have been hung over many times before and not had this happen. Could it be something to do with Nacho chips and Alcohol?

This morning i too woke with an enlarged uvula, i had no spicy food last night, i dont drink alcohol but I did not drink much water at work and i usually do...maybe dehydration...regardless myuvula was long enough where its laying on the back of my tongue and when i try to swollow my throat is soooo dry, and i gag from the feeling of this over sized monster dangling around.

As a nurse comon sense would tell me that if dhyrdated, it should shrink........however i am a mouth breather/snorer while i sleep and both times this has happened to me i have had an extremly dry throat......my best guess is that it is irritated and inflamed from the mouth breathing.

For the past several months, I've the sensation that a Phlem is hanging between my uvula and tonge or tonsils. This is the best way to describe it since, even though it was daily, it wasn't all day. But a couple days ago I saw it in the mirror and noticed that my uvula was longer than usual. Long enough that it seems to me that is going down my throath (well not quite yet, but it definetely longer)

I Just got this the other day and it wont go away, My uvula has a whole bunch of white spots on it, and every time I swallow it feels like I'm swallowing it. I sound very weird when I talk, and I want it to go away. I think I have this because I have been sick, and not able to breathe through my nose at night so I have to sleep with my mouth open. I wake up like 3-4 times at night from a dry mouth and I immediately have to drink water. I'm going to the doctor today, and hopefully they will give me something to help. Thanks for all the suggestions and comments to help me also figure this out. :)

When I awoke this morning my uvula was swollen so big that it felt like something was stuck in my mouth. This is the first time this has ever happened to me.I had crushed redpeppers on pizza before going to sleep. But I never eat crushed redpeppers before, I wonder if some of the pepper got caught in my throat to cause this?

Okay, here's what I know and it's from way to much experience of my own. If you know it's not dehydration or from snoring, or not just a cold/flu. Look in the mirror with a flashlight.First, determine change in color of the uvula and if the left and right side of the back of your throat (tonsils) are also getting that same color. If it's just red and you have no fever, headache or lower back pain it could be just a viral infection and it may clear up on it's own. Antibiotics will not help with this type if it's not strep infection. However, if you do have fever, headache or lower back pain see a doctor. If it's white and maybe chunky (cottage cheese type) at the back, waste no time to see a doctor for antibiotics. Antibiotics take about 3 days to stop the advancement of the infection. That's at least 3 days of total discomfort/pain so that why you need to start meds soonest.

Hi, I am 13 and my uvula is touching my tongue, I had chips and chilli sauce last night and once I had drank my coke my throat started hurting but I ignored it, then this morning I found out that its touching my tongue. If this is an allergic reaction Im not sure how the reaction could just happen now as I've always had chips but just last week starting having chilli sauce more often.. Is there anyway to get it back to normal though? And would this mean it would stay forever? Will it just go away soon? Is there something to help it go away? Thankyou

Hello. I have a similar concern but a different set of circumstances. On Friday Night (It is now Tuesday) I was eating a pizza...it was just from the oven and very hot. When I put it in my mouth it was to hot to chew so I hesitated...spit it out and make a mess or swallow. I swallowed. Later that day or the next morning (I cannot recall) I could feel my uvula and looked in my mouth at an enlarged/swollen uvula. I assumed this was a reaction to the burn and let it rest (only juice for the next few days). Well the swelling seems to have gone down quite some time ago but I can still feel it on the back of my tongue...and it looks deflated. DID I KILL MY UVULA?

I'm fairly certain it has to do with dehydration.  Many of us talk about a night of heavy drinking (alcohol dehydrates you) and some also mention eating a lot of salty foods.  I also think that some of us may have a slight allergy to alcohol, allowing some of us (like me) to get a swollen uvula easier than others.

One night I had a beer, 3 glasses of wine, and a whiskey before PTFOing (Passing the bleep Out).  I woke up with a uvula so large, i was talking like i had marbles in my mouth.  I would  gag/vomit every time it hung too far forward on my tongue.  I start to notice my uvula loosening after 3 drinks now.

These are my suggestions for when you notice you have an enlarged uvula:

Drink plenty of water: Number 1 rule for me. Space your drinking out with a glass of water between drinks.  When you have a swollen Uvula, drink plenty of water.  My rule would be to keep a glass with water at all times and drink normally.

Warm Salt Water:  Many people already suggest gargling salt water.  I believe making it luke warm (above body temperature but not scalding) works best.  It helps open up any pores and allow the salt to penetrate better and help keep hydrated.

Numbing: Sometimes a swollen uvula can be painful, i suggest eucalyptus cough drops or even a spoonful of honey to coat the back of your throat and uvula to help numb it.

NSAIDs: Anti-Inflammatory drugs like Aspirin and Alieve help to reduce the swelling quickly.  Allergy medicine can help too, but it dries me up too much.  I recommend NSAIDs because UNLESS YOU BELIEVE IT IS LIFE THREATENING, DO NOT LET A DOCTOR PRESCRIBE STEROIDS!  I only took two days worth (straight dosages, not the step-down blister pack) and i became a paranoid, heart-racing insomniac for 3 days.  Definitely not a pleasant feeling and the results were not worth the side effects.

Most of all Don't Panic: Most of the time the symptoms are light and you will be fine within a couple of days.   And as we can see from this thread, none of us are alone in this situation.  Everything will turn out ok in the end.

Hi The Uvulitis occurs mostly at night in most people who have GORD ( acid reflux) probably due to hiatus hernia, they snore and breath through mouth which make their mouth dry, make your pillow high, take lansoprazole at night if have no allergies, once in a while allergic reaction without any reflux but it might be systemic type, eat little at night reduce your weight, rol out other causes like infection.
