Extreme Colon Odor

I have similar problems to everyone else on this forum. Im a 72yr old female, diagnosed with Diverticulitis, Hiatus Hernia, Gallstones & Duodinitis 3 yrs ago, since then Im plagued with this awful fishy smell which I thought was vaginal but now find it is coming from my urine, belly button and "poo" . There are times when I can smell it coming from my fingertips & I am so traumatised with this because I feel that other people can smell it too. Ive repeatedly asked my GP to test me for TMAU but she just keeps prescribing different antacids for the Hernia. At the moment Im on Lansoprozole which I have now found out from the Pharmacist is not to be taken with my Thyroxine (Ive had a 7/8 thyroid removal 24 yrs ago when I was 7st 9lbs). I now weigh 15st 7lbs.

I'm absolutely certain that there is some type of malabsorption going on in my gut because my bowel movements are erratic & painful round my left side of my stomach before I need to poo. A month ago I had an  ultrasound scan which showed that I now have several Gallstones, 2 Cysts in my left Kidney and 1 cyst in my right Kidney & mild Fat Infiltration in my Liver. She has advised that I have my gallbladder removed. I'm also waiting for my Colonoscopy appointment to come through from the Hospita & I'm absolutely terrified of what this Colonoscopy will show in my bowel. I want to be around for a lot longer to be with my children and grandchildren. Both my parents lived well into their late eighties.

Ah so sorry you're having this problem at such a young age. I have just had a colonoscopy & for some reason the odour is not as bad as it was (I think its to do with the colon cleanse I took). It is still there and I am now trying to watch what I eat and have cut lots of fat in my diet & also eggs & red meat. Have you been to your GP to have a test for TRIMETHYLAMINURIA. This is called the "Fish Odour Syndrome". If you google it, you will find a forum on there who are doing a lot of research into this.

I have posted on here in the past about this problem. I have exactly the same symptoms as you and this has only happened since I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis almost 3 yrs ago & I honestly think that this odor is to do with malabsorption in the gut due to my Diverticulitis (the odor is definitely coming from my poo & urine and also my pores)

. I have repeatedly asked my GP for a blood test for "TRIMETHYLAMINURIA" which is also called "Fish Odor Syndrome". I have googled this and there is a Forum that are doing research into this.I have recently had another Colonoscopy to see the extent of the Diverticulitis and for some strange reason, the Odor has not been quite so bad (I think this is due to the Colon Cleanse prior to the Colonoscopy). I have also changed my diet and cut out a lot of fats, eggs, milk & butter because I do think these exaserbate the smell. Im certain this is not related to Gynae but mainly to do with the gut. so please go to your GP and be referred for a colonoscopy to determine if you have Diverticulitis.

Get a Gi doc, and have a colon oscapey done.
You need to know what going on in side you, thats the only way.

I too suffered with a body odor change...right after the birth of my son....then, other symptoms began to appear.  At  this point I now know I have "Hashimotos Disease"...which is an auto immune endocrine disease.  I recommend getting a full endocrine panel done.  Not just the "TSH".  My TSH was normal..but I had antibodies attacking my Thyroid gland.  And there are other glands that are part of the endocrine system.  This is only my guess, but since the endocrine system is a very important one consisting of glands and hormone production, if something is out of whack I'd think it could change ones body odor.

I can't believe there are so many people who are suffering from this fecal body odor and doctors can't seem to figure it out, in my case the odor developed slowly , I am now 37 and I started to notice it at the age of 30 somewhat but now it became unbearable,  I also want to dyie.  I pray for all of you guys, hope we can find a solution soon.

I have the same problem I've been dealing with it for five years now. I reached the point where I hate to leave my house. I hate to go around my family. I dread going shopping because I don't want anyone to smell me. I don't want to deal with their reactions. I have want to see my doctor more times than I can actually afford and I have been made to feel like it's all in my head. "IT'S NOT!!!"

Hello everyone ,  anyone who suffers from this odor , a way to manage symptoms is to eat phsylium husks every day as well as activated charcoal and lemon water, cause you need lots of water after eating psylium husks.  I have been on it for about 3 weeks and it makes the odor disappear.  Do your research on activated charcoal,  I believe it could at least to manage the symptoms, as for permanent cure we need doctors to do their job.

Get tested for liver disease.

I wouldnt mind dying right know. I dont think this will end. Abadoned by everyone. People think im so f+cking stupid that I dont realize there making fun of me in front of me. I trust no one. People who say were friends join in my own family does the same. I want to be someone else. Even if theres a cure my depression is to far gone. I tried to hang my self but I didnt like the shaking my body went Into and cut the extention chord. Ever had the smell around others, in a car,standing in line, watching movies, walking, at work, shopping, visiting hospitals,talking to girls, parties, school, holidays.

O, MY GOD THIS IS CRAZY, I TOO AM SUFFERING WITH THE SAME THING. I TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY BODY MORE SO BECAUSE OF THE BO PROBLEM AND NOTHING HELPS I'VED DONE ALL THE THINGS FROM COLONOSCOPY TO THOUSANDS OF DOLLAR AT HE DR'S OFFICE. I AM WELL OVER ONE IF NOT TWO HUNDRED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS BECAUSE OF BILLS CONCERNING ALL OF THIS. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO HAD THE BEFORE THE PERIOD SITUATION. I GET IT IN THE TWO WEEK FRAME WITH ALL THE WEIGHT GAIN GROIN PAIN AND THE SMELL IS HORRIFIED AND VERY OFFENSIVE. YES I TOO GET THE SAME EXPRESSION ON PEOPLES FACES AND YES THE ORDOR IS OUT OF OUR CONTROL NO MATTER WHAT WE DO IT PERFUESES OUT OF THE BODY REAL BAD.YES YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS.
