I am fairly new to running, and have been trying to build the miles up steadily in preperation for a half marathon.
1. Yesterday towards the end of my run started i getting a sharp pain along the side of my foot on the bridge part, and it is still painfull now and uncomfortable to walk on. There is no brusing. Any idea what this could be, and how to prevent it. I had the same thing a few months back in my right foot and it took 3 weeks to go way.
2. If i am unable to run for 2 weeks for example, how much of my form will i lose?, will it take another 2 weeks to get bk, or will i retain my fitness?
3. Im currently running around 9 miles, am i on target to build up to around 14 in preperation for the marathon.
sorry about the word count, and thanks in advance for any help

Anytime you have a sharp pain and it doesn't go away(uncomfortable walking) it's best that you stop running immediately and consult a doctor.
Missing a week or 2 of running is unlikely going to hurt your trainig but if your injury is serious, which could sideline you for a month or more then you will lose some fitness.
So my advice is to get it checked--hopefully it will be minor and you'll be back on the road soon!

If you feel like going to a doctor, by all means go. Foot pains, I've discovered, can be caused by several different things. Most are minor, some are big. The best advice is just to stay off of it. Not long ago I had a sharp pain on the top of my foot, and for several days it hurt to walk on it. I stopped running for a month and it seems to be better now. If you don't see a doctor, it's really kind of guessing on your part as to how long you have to stay off of it. I initially guessed 2-3 weeks for myself, but wanted to err on the side of caution, which I think is almost always a good idea, especially if you've still got several months until your goal. For a period of longer than 2 weeks, you probably will lose some fitness. I find the thing I lost most is my aerobic capacity. I just can't go very long without getting winded. The best thing to do is find some cross training that doesn't aggrivate your injury. Try biking, swimming, maybe an elliptical, whatever doesn't put too much strain on the foot. There's also a loss in muscle, so weights are a good idea too. Do any quad, hamstring, and calf exercises as long as they don't hurt your foot.
And don't worry about it too much. If you're running 9 pre-injury, you've got plenty of time to recover and safely build up to 14 before September. You're ahead of the game already, so don't sweat it. Hope it is something minor and you're back at it soon. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, very kind of you. I think ill just stay off it for a week or 2, and do some cross training insted, but nothing gives quite the same hit as running :( .
