I am a reasonably healthy 76 year old lady ,and I have had hammer toes as long as I can remember ,as did my mother before me,I have recently started having problems with the balls of my feet, tmy pedietrist informed me that the cause of my problem was my hammer toes putting pressure on the front of my feet.I am now waiting to have surgery to correct my toes but some of the comments here are very negative and I really do not know what to do.

That decision is something to take your time with as once the surgery is done, you will not know if it will take care of the problem at all.  You can opt to try non-surgical interventions first to see if they may help you with the pain in the balls of your feet.  You can try some modified footwear that would allow you to get some of the pressure off of the area of concern.  You may also try cushioning where the balls of the feet sit.  Taking pain meds for the discomfort may be used as well.  If you can limit the activity that aggravates the pain, then you may be able to avoid the surgery altogether.
