Hello, I had hammertoe surgery on my 2nd 3rd and 4th toes on my right foot on november 20th 2007. I am concerned that i will no longer be able to bend my toes because i cant bend them when i try. Has anyone who has undergone hammertoe surgery been able to bend their toes or not bend them afterwards? How long did it take? I do not have any pins in my toes. Please feel free to tell me about your hammertoe surgery.

thank you

Hi Domin,

I'm curious to know how you are doing now with your recovery. I just had the surgery on all of my toes except the big toes. I do have pins in all but the pinkys.

I think I'm healing well, and have minimal swelling, but they do feel numb, cold and a bit painful still. It's been only 12 days since surgery though.

I am scared to have the pins removed in 2 more weeks, but my dr. promises it wont hurt!!!

Hi Domin,

I had a bunionectomy and hammertoe surgery (2 - with metetarsal shorteneded, 4, 5 - all with silicone joint spacers). My surgery was 11.27.07. I had no pins in my toes and my incisions were done on the sides of my toes so any scars would be hidden. Around the sixth week after surgery, my toes began to feel like they were apart of my foot. I could wiggle them 2-3 weeks after surgery. As for bending them, PT helped alot. You can also try bending the toes on your other foot while you're working toes that had surgery. It should kind of help your toes to "remember" how to bend again. All in all, my toes bend pretty decent now.

I just had surgery on my left foot (same thing but with 2,3,4,5) on 1.29.08 and can wiggle my toes now (just not sure if I should be or not...). I wish you the best and hope this in some way helped...

Hey,

I had surgery Januay 19 - 8 tes (only big toe was not opperated on).

Pin removel does not hurt! i was terrified of it, but it was nothing.

I cant bend my toes, and Doctor says it can take up to a year for full recovery, toes are still swollen but other then that no major issues.

Im supper happy i got this done, and recovery was easy.

I had three hammer toes corrected and a bunionectomy on 4/25.  Presently, I am undergoing PT.  Like the posters above, I am concerned about the recovery time.  I have vastly improved movement, but feel that full recovery is a looong way off.  The ball of my foot feels too big or round and two of my toes are quite inflexible.  The fourth toe is a bit weak.  Nonetheless, I am determined to recovery as much mobility as possible as quicky as possible.  Already I am able to bike and use the elliptical.  I attribute this to therapy and my at home exercises.  I had no choice but to have the foot operated on.  Under those circumstances, I too am happy with the result since the pain I had been experiencing has gone away.

I'm bout to get toe surgery and don't know how I'm going to get around or how long I should take off for work or if I should get crutches

Me too. I told them at work I'd be back in 4 weeks, but the dr. told me 8 wks is more like it. (I stand the whole time). Are you getting pins? (I am). Are you having both feet done at one surgery? (I am). My doc told me I won't need crutches but I'm not so sure. So these are
a few factors you need to consider. Good Luck!

i had hammer toe surgery on 4.2.13 and had pins in my toe next to my big toe on booth feet.i am able to walk without crutches but if i go out i use the crutches so people keep away from you ..this is good because the last thing you want is someone knocking your toes x

Can you feel the pins in your toes? I am scheduled for hammertoe surgery soon; however, I don't like the idea of a pin sticking out of my toe or having it pulled out. I'm sure that will hurt a lot.

I had a lot of surgery done on my right foot 2.25.13.  3 hammer toes~~yes, pins.  a bunion on the outside of foot by little toe~~no pin but screw.  Had what was thought to be a bone spur on the back of my heel.  Had that taken care of too.  they had to cut the achilles tendon to get to the spur which turned out to be a ridge of bone.  tomorrow I get the pins out.  really not lookimg forward to it :-)).  Hoping it doesn't hurt too bad.  when I had my bunions done in 1996 it didnpt hurt AT ALL to have the pins out so I'm relying on that experince to get me through tomorrow.  I have been on crutches since surgery and will be another couple weeks due to the tendon issue.  well hopefully just the boot and not the crutches.

I had my bunions removed on both of my feet as well as hammertoe correction with pins on my toes next to my big toe and toe shortening on the other toes (with pins as well). The surgery was done 3.12.13 One week apart and I am still recovering! I have visible scarring on my toes and on the side of my feet from the bunion incesion and I was told by my Dr. to rub vaseline 3xs a day to soften the skin especially on the sides of my feet. I decided to use shea butter on my toes for the scarring although i dont see any changes. Maybe I will try "Maderma" for the scarring and see how that goes. As of today I am able to wiggle all of my toes and I can bend my big toe, the 3rd toe and 4rth toe. My pinky and 2nd toe are a little harder to try to bend but I try to do toe exercises everyday and apply pressure to them while I am home. I am walking faster now and although I am not suppose to wear heels I did try on a pair of heels and who was I kidding! Lol the pain was crazy and I couldn't even fit the size I wore before surgery. (my shoe size is bigger which is strange and i dont understand) I was told by my Dr. I should be able to wear heels by July (crossing fingers). My toes aren't as swollen anymore and I have noticed they are still shrinking 2months post-op. As far as pain and un comfort I still experience both depending on how long I am on my feet. I havn't tried jogging or running yet, mostly because I am scared my second toe will break because its so stiff lol. I am back to working out..I use the stair master and bike and of course I am extremely careful with any other exercises that involve bending of the toes/feet. Everyone heels (lol) differently but I hope my post can help and answer any questions.

As far as scars are concerned, try silicon pads, like "Scar Away" they do take the redness out and flatten the scar. I had a bunionechtomy, ligament repair on the second metatarsal and a hammertoe repair on the second toe. I started using he silicon pad at six weeks, after the wounds had healed, and it's made a huge difference! My scar on the top of my foot looks like a straight white line, with a little bruising around it. My surgery was in April 2013.

I would like to know if you have now recovered. I had two of my toes pinned 6 weeks ago and 3 days ago they were removed. Your description of the ball of your foot and toes sounds similar to my experience. Did the symptoms disappear and how long was it before your foot returned to normal (if it has). I wasn't given any physio exercises. What exercises did you do?
