hello everyone. I thought maybe someone might find this info helpful. My 21yr old son(at the time) had to have a chest xray as part of a job requirement. Thank God for this. He didnt get the job, instead, was referred to a specialist. We didnt know what was going on. It was real scarey. Turns out, they saw the same unexplainable knot (as others have written) only it was sitting on his hip joint. Further xrays showed other knots forming on his wrist and leg. He was diagnosed at UCLA with Fibrodysplasia.  This is a mutation of the bodys repair mechanism, causing tissue, muscle, ligament and tendons to be ossified spontaneously or when damaged. Its a connective tissue disease. It is not fatal, is treatable. His treatment was to break the pelvic bones, remove the knot and from the bone bank, fill in the space where the knot was with donated bone mash. He required physical therapy and is now just fine. No problems with it anymore. Every year he has to have a full  body scan to detect any new knots. To date, hes had no recurrrences. This may help one of you. Theres a severe form of Fibrodysplasia, called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans. (stone man disease.) Thank you.

You'll be in my prayers. Fear is tormenting, and medical problems sure can cause fear quickly. I too have a "swelling" and a hard knot at the end of the sternoclavicular joint. There is pain radiating to the shoulder joint and to the back of my shoulder. I will be going for an MRI on Monday. One of the questions the doctor (an orthopedic) asked me was if I'd had a temperature or felt bad as this might be simply an infection. Best of luck for all of us who have this problem bugging us. I am 64 years old, have fibromyalgia and have had 3 cervical fusions. Perhaps this is scar tissue. Whatever it ends up being, I will trust God to take care of me. He always has.

Hello,

I am new to this site, I am 26 years old and have been suffering with Costochondiritis since i was 17, i also have a hard lump on my clavicle near my throat which is painful at times, i also have a lump at the other end underneath my shoulder, i've been told it's sclerosis and that its an infected overgrown bone. I have had several tests and even an operation on my shoulder, the CT scan showed the evidence of this sclerosis.

Not all cancers grow quickly. It is actually more likely to grow and spread slowly.

Hi. I'm also 26 and I have lumps on my clavicle that aren't sore and it's lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes). I also have lumps on the side of my neck and under my arm.Get to your doctor immediately, tell him your symptoms and request a cat scan. Hodgekin's Disease Lymphoma affects people age 15-35. Best of luck to you and I hope it isn't cancer. Let me know how it turns out.

I was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma. I have new lumps on my clavicle due to the lymphoma. They also feel hard like it's part of the bone. Do you have any other lumps? Check your neck, under arms & groin area and GO see a doctor and request a CAT scan.

I have had this same hard lump come up on one side of my clavicle. I had an x-ray, an ultrasound, then was sent to the Ortho folks who ordered an MRI. He then sent me to the ENT who ordered a CT scan. A radiologist reviewed all of these and confirmed what the Ortho doctor said. It is called a Degenerative Sterno Clavicular Cyst. The joint between the clavicles is leaking fluid and created a fluid filled cyst (which is very hard but not bone). Basically this is a form of arthritis. It could go away on it's own but probably not. It does cause pain occasionally across my chest at night depending on how I position my arm. If it uncomfortable they said a radiologist using an ultrasound could drain it but it might just come back. No more $$ on this for me. I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in my back and had two fusions already. This is just another sign of poor genetics. I was scared of the cancer possibility also but all doctors and radiologist confirmed this was not a tumor at all. Hope this helps someone!

My husband has the same thing, had a xray last year, and completely checked out. Doctor could not really explain why it was there, but, it was not anything terrible.

One thing I would like to know, has anyone that has this hard looking nodule, had to use any type of eye drop in the past?  Or any type of steriods? Thanks, just a hunch.

I have Fibromyalgia and while getting Physical Therapy for back and legg tightness I found this big lump. My doctor took x-rays right away and I am waiting for the results. I noticed tonight that it bothers me a little when I swallow. It was tested for a cyst and that is not it. Waiting on chest,, lung and clavicle x-rays results. Don't fool around with it though because I read online that a tumor for breast cancer can also show up there. I would rather be safe than sorry!!! Good luckj. Fibromyalgia does produce a lot of problems!

Flo, do u have any other symptoms? I ask because I couldnt lift arms and had gotten progressivly worse. I even went to the Mayo. Ive seen neurologists, rheumatologists, orthopedics, ents and noone could find it with any scan! Why? Because noone was looking for it, it took a blood clot in my arm before I was diagnosed. Please search Thoracic outlet syndrom. See if any symptoms are relatable. If so, which is a long shot, please see thoracic surgeon and request the specific ultrasound. Mine started with arms. If untreated gets progressivly worse. Gl to you.

I am 63. I noticed a lump the size of a grape 3 months ago. It was hard and did not move. I went to the doctor and he said it was arthritis . He said there is a joint between the sternum and collarbone . He said his father has it. The doctor (without even touching it) immediately said it was arthritis. I had never heard of this before . He did have an MRI done and found nothing unusual. But..... Within the last week, the lump has completely disappeared. It's like I never even had it. So my question is: do these lumps go away? Is it going to appear somewhere in another part of my body? Or....is it in fact cancer? Any thoughts from anyone? I feel terrific and am very active and would like to put this to rest. It's always on my mind. I notice this each time I look in the mirror.

This may be true in your situation. but this is not the case for all cancers. There are many slow growing cancers out there such as the indolent form of Lymphoma. That is a very flip remark by your doctor, but I assume that he said it as a form of reassurance. I hope it was accurate for you. Best..
