I'm a 59 year old female. I took ONE  over the counter Diphenhydramine HCI 50 mg last night as a sleep aid. I experienced seizures off and on for about an hour. NEVER had a seizure in my life! Did not recognize it as seizures until the last one. I was aware of what was going on while it happened. Fell asleep after that for a couple of hours. SCARY! I will NEVER take that stuff again! Btw, I don't take any other medication other than Levothyroid for an underactive thyroid. I checked drug interactions and there are none recorded.

And I don't have any other medical issues other than being post menopausal.

I have personally experienced a seizure caused by excessive use of diphenhydramine. I was taking it as a night time sleep aid, but occasionally enjoyed the trip from the overdose. I went through a bottle of 96 tell caplets (each 50 mg) in two days. I have been abusing this product since I was 13. I'm now 20 and have since had to up my dosage. It wasn't until last week that I experienced anything dangerous. My fiance said I just stopped, stared blankly, and fell straight back, hitting my head on the pavement. He said I began having a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. Next thing I knew, I was in a hospital bed hooked up to god knows what. I don't remember anything other than trying to walk into the house before I went blank. I have no history of epilepsy or seizures. I have no idea how that dosage caused me to seize (because I've taken much more in the past.). I suppose it's random, but possible. If the meds are causing her to seize...I would suggest she try something else.

I overdosed on unisom recently at a party. I took 14 gell capsules all at once. I hallucinated for a good solid 2 hours until I had a seizure and spent 2 nights in the hospital. I could have died with how fast my heart was beating. Dont be dumb with that stuff. Use it for sleep only. You never truly understand how beautiful life is until you experience what death is like.

This same thing happened to my daughter 23, she had a seizure after a double dose of Zzzzquil which has diphenhydramine. No one will acknowledge that this triggered the seizure and they told her she needs to be on epileptic meds. She quit taking the ZzzQuil and has not had any seizures. She does not want to take the meds because she has always been healthy until taking this ZzzQuil.

I have read so much on diphenhydramine causing seizures and they just want to put her on meds which coincidentally have a side effect of potentially triggering seizures. It’s been a horrible couple of months and no one will listen to us.

Has your daughter had any seizures since?

I would say this may qualify as mal practice. You should consult with an medical malpractice attorney.
