Hi there. Can anyone here tell me in which cases of hemolytic anemia someone would need a splenectomy? I have heard that this is a treatment that is sometimes used but I haven't got any other information apart from that so if you could fill me in on the details then that would be great.

Splenectomies are sometimes performed in extreme cases of Hereditary spherocytosis. Negative DAT and genetic studies are needed for doctors to resort to this extreme measure, and it is certainly not done often. However, it is possible to function without a spleen perfectly normally, so the person's quality of life can increase considerably.
