Hi, my friend is 42 years old and he visited his doctor for regular control last week. When doctor received results he told him his ferritin level is high. Also doctor told him that he would have to make some other analyses to find out what caused ferritin level too high. I would like to know something more about this and what ferritin level may show.

Hi, first of all feritin is protein of blood which stores iron in organism. High level of ferritin may indicate several things but it is always good to check what caused increades level of ferritin in the blood. High level of ferritin may be found in some inflammations, people who are alcoholics, late stages of some cancers and lymphoma. I hope your friend will be just fine.

Hello there,

Ferritin is a protein that binds with iron and in the human body ferritin acts as a buffer against iron deficiency and iron surplus. Rise or fall of ferritin level can result in various health issues. Normal ferritin count is 30-300 ng/mL for men and 15-200 ng/mL for women.

The high ferritin level symptoms usually go unnoticed in the beginning but afterwards elevated ferritin blood levels can cause for example pain in the joints because iron is depositing in the body. It is also causing darkening of the skin and lethargy, fatigue, pain in the abdomen, lack of sex drive and various cardiac issues.

Treatment for high ferritin levels is focused on reducing its levels and bringing it back to normal.
