Stand in a darkened room with a small (penlight) flashlight in hand.
Position the flashlight BEHIND the scrotum on the side where you suspect the hydrocele. A large yellow or clear glow through the scrotum (from the back light) might indicate clear or yellow liquid collecting. The Testicle will NOT pass light, and so will appear a dark mass. A varicocele ( or enlarged network of veins) will show a distinct red glow, as opposed to yellow/clear. Also, when laying down, the varicocele will deflate and "go away" until you stand again. The hydrocele will not.
These simple steps can help you identify structures inside the scrotum, but can't be used to replace a doctor's exam. Finally, keep the small penlight flashlight moving, so the bulb doesn't overheat or burn your scrotum. They can get warm when left on, and you don't want to burn yourself.
