Hi, I have rash over buttocks and lower extremities, painful and swollen knees and fever. Doctor has ordered some lab tests but he is suspecting HSP (Henoch Schonlein Purpura). What is this condition like? Is it treatable?

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is a form of blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis) affecting the small arterial vessels called capillaries in the skin and the kidneys. HSP is manifested by skin rash (most obvious over the buttocks and behind the lower extremities). Joint inflammation is seen as swelled and painful knees and ankles, what is also called arthritis. Cramping pain in the abdomen is another symptom. After an infection of throat or breathing passages HSP may occur. Actually, it is body’s inappropriate reaction to bacteria or virus, that causes symptoms of HSP. Treatment usually includes pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications and cortisones.
