I just wanted to let you know that it CAN be a problem in people with hypothyroidism in whom the synthroid causes mild heartrate problems, and many people I know have that over time on synthroid.

I have been hypothyroid for a while and have something called polyglandular dysfunction, with hashiimotos, just simply meaning other endocrine glands are affected too, mainly adrenals in me.  Even though I am hypothyroid, I think in someone like me taking stimulants might be something to proceed with caution.  Even if you are hypothyroid, the synthroid has the side-effect in many people of causing a rapid or irregular heartbeat, over time you may develop a little atrophy, like I have. If I was unaware, and I was for some time, that I had this condition, and took a stimulant, I think it could make the rapid irregular heartbeat worse, maybe much worse. That is why the docs usually do an ekg before starting someone on stimulants.

Now I am on a medicine called metoprolol to correct the irregular rapid heartbeat, however, it also causes hypothyroidism!!! It is undoing my synthroid to some extent and I am tired alot and retaining more fluid due to more inactivity. I don't feel like moving. So now maybe adderall or something like that could be given safely to me, but perhaps now my heart condition, even though treated, would exclude me.

I don't know about armour. I always liked armour, but too hard to get, they kept shutting down my strength and messing around with it.  My doc got frustrated and made me go back on synthroid. I think the synthroid makes me more active, but I think it messes with my heart more than the armour.

I wasn't diagnosised with ADD until I was in my early 50s.  I've been hypothyroid since I was about 12 or 13.  I may have actually been ADHD prior to the radioactive pill I was given that resulted in me being hypothyroid.  I was initially put on Strattra. It helped but the side effects - excessing sweating, light headedness, etc. were the reason I was switched to Adderall, which worked very well but when I no longer had insurance & the manufacturer stopped offering Patient Assistance I could no longer afford it.  The least expensive medication was to take 4-10 mg methylphenid 2 times a day. (Purchased at Walmart.)  Then, I discovered Vyanse (sp), which was available through patient assistance.  It's pretty awesome.  Perhaps it would help you.  Dealing with ADD & hypothyriodism isn't any fun.  Good Luck.

For your own benefit I suggest you get an Iodine urinary excretion test. Common metabolic mimic of ADHD is Iodine deficiency. Do you have throid antibodies or not?. Might save you some money and years of grief. Did you have Hypothyroidism treated before treated ADHD. This would be a more rational approach.

I recently went through this. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age 23. Im 31 currently enrolled in Nursing school and was struggling to focus and stay awake. I was drinking coffee with soy milk in it. I recently was put on Adderall Xr and came across an article online about soy products affecting absorption of the medication. Needless to say I think the problem is the soy and I dont think Im ADD. Thank you for this information.

How are you doing now? Just curious. Did the doctors take your thyroid out. Do you have high antibodies or tumors?

Yes I agree about synthroid and heart issues. Naturethroud has had best results but still need inderal for tremors and palpitations. Used adderall for years off and on. I am 54 with bad ADD. I get scared about heart then quit. I have graves disease and total thyroidectomy. What a mess with all of thid

I definitely think adderall messes with kidney function and insulin. If that's the case, it makes sense that cancer is linked if the kidneys can't properly filter and the body holds excess sugar. I personally have been in the ER with kidney issues twice since taking adderall. I had lots of sugar cravings and I am NOT a sweets person. Since starting it, my thyroid levels have not been stable for long. I do have to make sure I get lots of water and keep my kidneys full and not get dehydrated.

Really?! Because I'm on Adderall and have a history of hypothyroidism. It's gone away for now but I was afraid the Adderall would create problems again. Is it possible you could post some links or something, because this would be a Huge load off my mind. If it isn't too much trouble of course.

-Thanks for this post by the way! It's given me hope!

Hello hun yes , I too suffer from hashimoto disease as well as adhd. and all the issues that u mentioned are what I go tho as well. I will say that the adderall will help with ur focus and concentration. I'm on 30 MG of adderall SID. (once a day) plus 50 MG of levotyroxine once a day. and I have seen significant improvement.

Yes, sounds like you have hypothyroidism. I had it for 10 years without realizing and am just getting treated now.
