I am a 16 year old female, I have had hemrroids for the past 6months-8months and blood when i wipe for maybe a year, this is almost always present. This weekend I was given medicine that upset my stomach, and I got them very very bad, is this normal? I know my dad gets them but I haven't heard of someone my age. Could I have to have surgery? I only go to "the bathroom" once a week at best. I have a normal diet and I am not overweight. (lol) thanks if you reply :)

Hi kaysuewood
Sometimes surgery is used to cauterise or 'snip off' these enlarged veins in the anal area, if they get too big.
The rest of the time, its important to create soft stools that aren't hard to pass; that will help prevent the development of more serious hemorrhoids that may require surgery. A bowel motion once a week will likely produce a large, difficult-to-pass stool - has this been your experience?
Has your doctor talked to you about a diet high in soluble fibre and water to create the soft stools and more frequent bowel motions?
Regards, Olwen :-)
P.S. what was the medication that upset your stomach?

It was some type of anti-biotic for a sinus infection apparently the strongest prescribed. But i went to the doctors yesterday and am on fiber powder (MiraLAX, which is not a prescription) to help with the stool and whatnot. I was referred to a surgeon, so here soon I will go see them.( I was referred to the surgeon because of my age and being a female, as my doctor is male lol.) So I am hoping I don't need surgery. Also! I am happy to report that i have actually went to the bathroom normally!

Hello,
It is not necessarily uncommon for someone your age to get "Hemorrhoids" Especially since genetics plays a part in it any your father has them. It is very important for you to get serious about this problem though and get into see a good doctor, a colorectal surgeon. One of the big problem for women that men don't seem to have is that women who have a hemrodictomy (The BIG hemorrhoid surgery) have a 47% chance of lifelong sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, most of the herbal "Cures" that you find on the internet won't tell you that as you spend years taking there products to mask the symptoms of hemorrhoids while the problem gets worse and worse and you go from grade 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 and 5 hemorrhoids. As you go from grade 3 to 4 your surgeon loses a lot of his nonsurgical options for treating you.
Now is the time you want to get in as you can probably be treated with a simple nonsurgical procedure like in office IRC which is non painful and there is no down time.
Don't let this keep getting worse.
Make sure you see a doctor Qualified to treat this, a colorectal surgeon or a Proctologist who is certified.
For much more information you can check out:
I wish the best for you and don't hesitate to ask me any questions you have.
