I didn't even know I had a problem.  I went to my family doc and he said my thyroid was enlarged and that he noticed it about 6 months ago and was keeping an eye on it.  He wanted me to get an ultrasound of my thyroid.  The ultrasound revealed very large nodules in my thyroid.  So...I was referred to an ENT specialist who removed my entire thyroid on March 28th 2011.  I recovered really well from the surgery and my scar is almost unnoticeable.  Everyone sees the scar and say wow... you have healed great!  But.... no one understands how awful you still feel from not having that thyroid hormone in your body.... it was so frustrating to have people say how great I looked and I felt so terrible.  I could hardly function.  My thoughts were scattered, I was exhausted, I was freezing all the time, and my doctor called and said they found 2 small spots of cancer in my thyroid tissue that they had removed.  I was scared... but didn't panic...yet... I was referred to and Endocrinologist (who i LOVE) and he explained to me that I had papillary cancer on one side and papillary/follicular cancer on the other side.  He thought that they had removed all of the cancer but wants me to do the Thyrogen Induced RAI as a precaution.  He assured me that for this cancer to spread was very rare and that I would live to be an old woman. (I am 42 now).  He told me not to look at it like I had thyroid cancer but like I had diabetes or high blood pressure... that relieved my mind somewhat. I agreed to the RAI and I go May 9-12.  After reading the posts on here I am glad that I am going ahead with the treatment. Thanks to everyone who has shared.  I will keep you in my prayers.  God Bless you all :)

I first came on this site as DarkAngel.  Another name I used on another site.  I wasn't sure how involved I was going to get with this site.  I have been a little discouraged by the lack of answers from others, but I am going to keep posting on here and hope it helps someone else.  This week I started my radioactive iodine therapy I-131.  Monday and Tuesday I received Thyrogen shots to lower the TSH in my body before the treatment.  I have been on a low iodine diet for 2 weeks (the hardest part) so that it will help my tissue soak in the RAI.  The shots did make my arms a little sore (one in each) but not too bad.  like a flu shot.  I took the I-131 pills on Wed. 5/11/11.  The only side effects I have had were a slight fever, diahrrea and mild nausea.  It is hard staying away from everyone and not hugging anyone but other than that, I really don't feel radioactive at all.  lol.  I don't think I had the neck pain because I had a total thyroidectomy and had very little tissue for the RAI to absorb into in my neck.  I get my total body scan on Monday and will find out if I have any other things to worry about.  lol.  Please feel free to leave posts on here for me if you have any questions or fears of what lies ahead.  It really did help me to get on here and get some idea of what was going to happen.  God bless you all. :)  Amy
