Help! Need some advice. I’m a type 1 diabetic and normally have really good management of my blood glucose, but a few weeks ago I was at work, I’d had to skip lunch cos I was so busy and in the afternoon I ended up having a hypo. At first I didn’t quite get what was happening, and my behaviour was clearly a bit odd, but the boss asked me to do something and I couldn’t get it sorted. Anyway, I realised that I needed to eat something, sorted myself out, but then was told I’d be given a written warning cos he thought I’d been out the night before and was too tired to do my work properly – which honestly I wasn’t’. I’m devastated! Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice about what I should do? Thanks.

Okay – that sounds like a really bad deal, and I have to say if that happened to me I’d be really unhappy too, not only cos it’s not your fault but also cos I’d feel like no-one actually cared and it could have been more serious. I suppose I’d ask a couple of questions – firstly, does your employer know that you’re diabetic and does the first aider know too? Also, do your work colleagues know and would they know a) how to recognise if you were having a hypo and b) what to do if you did. If you haven’t told the guys at work (you didn’t say how old you are or how long you’ve been at your work place) then you really must – not just from a point of view of them not getting it if something happens, but from a safety aspect where one day you might need them. Tell them where your glucose tabs are, and tell them you take insulin and where you keep it. I’m not suggesting you give them all the gory details, just that they know how to help you if needed. Am sure your boss will feel differently if they didn’t realise what has happened. If the answer to all the other questions is yes, then I’d either speak directly to his line manager or get myself to HR and get it dealt with straight away as it contravenes loads of employment laws! Good luck!
