Hello,
I went to talk to a friend of mine about my depression and he told me that I should probably start taking some antidepressants in order to feel better.
However, he told me as well that these pills are not quite "happy pills" because, as I could conclude from what he told me, they don't really make you feel happy or cheerful.
. Well, I didn't really think that these pills could make you happy but I didn't quite understand what my friend tried to tell me since I don't know much about these antidepressants. Is there anyone here who could explain to me why these pills aren't "happy pills"?

Exactly, what it means is that these "happy pills" are not going to make you happy nor cheerful, they are not going to make you feel any better meaning that they won't bring any positive emotions. What these will do is that these will shut down your negative emotions and also lower your positive emotions, so the main thing that these pills are doing is that they are making you kind of numb and cold. This is why I don't like using antidepressants and whenever someone asks me about these, I advise them not to use them but to try some other kind of treatment.

Eating Boss is right but there is a reason why depressed people use antidepressants and that is because they cannot fight these thoughts of theirs on their own and antidepressants are there to help them with their thoughts. Although they do make you numb and cold, they also make you calm so you are not nervous and depressed, you are just peaceful. The thing is that it makes you too peaceful, you won't be able to be joyful or really happy while using them either, that is why these pills are not really "happy pills", at least that is how I see it.

Yes, of course, there are other ways of treating depression, there have to be other ways, otherwise everybody would be using antidepressants.
You have these special teas made for depression which are 100% natural but I'm afraid that these actually have the same effect as antidepressants, the only difference is that these are completely natural.
You could change your lifestyle, your habits, you can start exercising, running, go to the gym, change your diet, all of this can really help you with depression. You should travel, you should meet new people and you should probably start seeing a psychologist, this would all do you good.

I think that it is very easy to understand what this means. Pills such are antidepressants won't be able to help you feel happy, good, etc. A lot of people, as soon as they find out that they are dealing with anxiety or depression, they go to see the expert telling them that they need some antidepressants. They believe that those pills will help them be happy. But they won't because, like you said, antidepressants are not "happy pills". That is just one myth that people should not believe at. Pills also can made you feel differently, like you are not yourself.

Happy pills don't exist. If they do, they are not legal and that is the only truth. I also have heard this thing when I find out that I am having problems with anxiety. I went to see my doctor and I did told him that I want him to prescribe antidepressants to me because I have heard that those pills can help me with my behavior problems.
He looked at me very significantly telling me that he is sick and tired of people who think this way. He told me that every day at least one person tells him exactly the same thing because they believe that pills can make time happy. Over and over again.

Yes, doctors are allergic to this. At least, mine is. Also, people should know that depression is not actually a normal unhappiness. Depression is not something everyone goes through at some point. Only someone who has not been depressed would say that. If you have a bad day or bad day at your work, that doesn't mean that you are dealing with depression. On contrary, depression feels like someone has reached inside your chest ripping it. That is the best way to describe it. Antidepressants can help you feel better, that is true, but they won't chase away that feeling that you are dealing with.

Yes, people needs to deal with the real issue in this situation, and the real issues are that so many people feel so low and so down that a doctor may think that they need some antidepressants, and that there isn’t enough provision of alternatives in these situations. The first choice treatment should definitely be a therapy. If therapy doesn't work, than doctor might tell you to start with antidepressants. But he will also tell you this myth about happy pills. In the end, you should remember that depression is not normal unhappiness and antidepressants are not ‘happy pills’. That is it!
