yes it is very possible that is what is going on. Pee is yellow and has a smell....wet dreams...do not and are thick and sticky in texture.

At 9, he is awfully young to be having wet dreams. It would be more creditable if he was 12 or 13. (I'm surprised nobody else had mentioned this.) If I was his father and he brought this issue to me, I would have told him, "Drop the pants, son." If I found he had a typical 9 year old's penis, meaning about an inch and a half long, as thick as one of his fingers and with testicles about the right size to be called "nuts", I would conclude that he hadn't yet reached the level of sexual maturity to have wet dreams.
My guess is that his bladder fills during the night, and he can hold it long enough to wake up and get to the bathroom, but he coughs and that sends a shock wave through his body that causes the bladder to leak just enough to leave a wet spot on his underware big enough to notice.
