I had stage 3 rectal cancer, surgery was performed Jan-07. Had to have Illeostomy bag until Oct-07. It has been 7 weeks since surgery and still have loose and uncontrollable stool at least 10-20 times a day. How long until this will eventually stop?

:-P Hi There!
I had lifesaving surgery in 2006 and a colostomy. I had six weeks in intensive care and was unconscious for 12 days. Believe me I was so glad to be alive after it all. They brought my family in to say goodbye and that I had only 3 hours to live! Surviving was incredible and still is even though I had the worst stoma I could have and suffered much pain and discomfort from it. It was changed to an illeostomy in october last after 9 hours bowel surgery, and is soo much better! I found the inflammation caused by surgery takes time to die down and of course their is acute sensitivity tocertain foods and then a naturally runny stool as poo from an illeostomy is, can become watery. try and keep a list on foods that creat this problem, like excessive vegetables. It took me till may this year to achieve poo like porridge which is the most comfortable. When this is achieved life becomes more relaxed and easy you feel better in yourself and leakingbags become less of a problem. It takes time but if you have a not to spicey or rich diet , things work out eventually. I now feel very well indeed and enjoy my food better than ever. My stoma has become a normal part of my life, and I dont worry about it any more. Life is soo valuable ,to have one more hour, or one more day, just one, is worth the struggle. Good Luck keep positive and time will literally heal!! X
