Hi, I took tramadol my entire pregnancy about 100-300mgs aday.My ob was aware and monotered us close. I had a heathy pregnancy. Nicu new that my baby could be born dependent on this drug and suffer withdrawls so they were prepared. She didn't show any signs of withdrawl. I am breastfeeding and still on tramadol, this may have helped. She is five months now and doing fantastic, she is happy and healthy.my best advise is to be up front with your md and don't worry so much. anxiety does not make for a healthy pregnancy.Best of luck mommies

I just wanted to let you know that I was pregnant with my first daughter in 2008 taking 50mg Tramadol 2 four times a day!  I was originally told to just stop taking it and when through such a huge withdrawal I couldn't function and probably was close to a miscarriage!  Finally saw a High Risk Doctor and they advised to stay on the medication if I needed to but that was a chance for withdrawal.  I tried to cut down here and there but I stopped working a month before my due date to try and wheen off myself so I would go through the withdrawal.  Well that Monday I was going to start I went for an ultra sound since my daughter was breach and they still wanted to see if she was breach and because of low fluid they admitted me.  The next day I had a c-section.  So I was unable to take myself off the tramadol.  I am happy to report she had a little breathing problem at first but that was fine within a few hours.  It was more from being born a month early.  They watched her in the NICU for several days to make sure there was no withdrawal but she was fine!!  I am now 5 weeks pregnant and going to continue the tramadol and try to use as little as possible but if needed I am going to take it because I have to take care of a 2 1/2 year old and deal with the arthritis!!!  Hope this helps some of you out there!!!!!  Good Luck Any questions please feel free to ask!!!

Hello, Ladies!

I posted earlier about taking Tramadol while pregnant.  During my third trimester, I was taking one-half to one tablet almost every day because of my shoulder pain, and the fact that the Tramadol helped my stomach pain so that I could eat.  I was also taking Ambien (about 20 mg per night) for anxiety and so that I could sleep through the discomfort.  My OB knew about my meds, and I never felt that she was judging me.

I am happy to report that I had my baby girl in February, and she was perfectly healthy.  She's now three months old, has hit every milestone early, eats well, smiles a LOT, and sleeps through the night.  In other words, she's the best baby ever and has never exhibited any health problems other than acid reflux, which is getting better.

Good luck, ladies!  I concur with what another poster said, about anxiety being worse than the Tramadol.

Hello Ladies- I have been following this tread since June of 2010 when I found out I was pregnant-but was on Tramadol. I was quite nervous about taking 2-3 tablets a day but within the 9 months time gradually weened my self to 0 about 2 weeks before I was due. I have read a lot o post from different woman who have taken ultram throughout the whole pregnancy and their baby came out fine. My daughter came out beautiful, alert, and has advanced beatifically. She is a happy baby and had no signs of withdrawal at birth or now. Since I had to go through a c-section the doc gave me vicodin for the next 6 weeks-and said the percentage that goes through the breast milk is very minimal. Plus i had to take vicoden cause of the incision pain I was going through. After that I stopped taking the vicoden and started with ultram again because of my chronic back pain and having a newborn now along with a 5 and 14 year old plus working and taking care of the house. My point is - ultram has been a lifesaver (compared to vicodin) I know that I can ween off of the medicine gradually and walk off withdrawal free. For those ladies that are worried-please don't be the anxiety is worse than the actual medicine. We all know what we need and if it's ultram to keep you functional then so be it.  God Bless all you ladies and your beautiful newborn babies. Take Care.

I too suffer from tramadol addiction.   Its been many years.  I am pregnant 10(WKS).  Should I quit cold turkey or would that be dangerous and cause miscarriage?

I've been reading everyone's post and I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I was addicted to tramadol. Couldn't go without taking it or else I would feel like I was dying. I had two miscarriages in the past year and they think that might have been why. After those, I knew I had to get off of these things. I just felt like I was in a daze 24/7. I am currently 5 weeks pregnant now and am completely off Tramadol and I am finally happy again. I feel better now then I did when I was on them. I did a ton of reasearch after attempting to quit these things on my own and felt so terrible I couldn't function. I found these supplements called L-Tyrosine... You don't need a prescription, it's almost like a vitamin. They help with depression, anxiety, and give you energy. Let me tell you, they helped TREMENDOUSLY with the whole withdrawl process. I still had the aches and pains but not nearly as bad when I took these. I would take about 3 a day. After about the 3rd day I was feeling myself again and I can finally enjoy life. It's worth a try, don't make a poor innocent child suffer when you can quit. I am a nurse and everything you intake crosses the placenta. So when you get high, your baby gets high. Don't put your child thru that. Trust me , try the L-Tyrosines they work!!! I ordered them offline, it was about $6 for a 100 pill bottle, or you can find them at The Vitamin World.

I feel for all of you going through this and I can completely understand the feelings of guilt.  Has anyone tried to take small doses of just Tylenol? I hear it helps your mood too so worth a try?

I've had a read through all your posts and they've been really useful to me. I just wanted to get in touch and let you know what I've been up to in the hope it may help someone. I was taking a maximum therapeutic dose of both tramadol and gabapentin for painful disc/nerve issues and had been for around 3 years. When I found out I was pregnant (around 9 weeks gone) I stopped the gaba and cut down the Tramadol from 8 to 1/2 a day within a week. Since I can't function for the whole pregnancy without any pain relief I have been prescribed co codamol to take as and when I need it for pain, but the last thing I want is a physical dependency on that (I'm trying on one a day in the evening when the pain is worst). The giving up both Tramadol and Gabapentin was extremely difficult - I felt like I was dying; I'm not sure which symptoms were related to the tram and which to the gaba, but it was definitely a tough week+. I cut down each day, and 10 days later I'm feeling fantastic - I've been in a fog for the past 3 years, and I'm out of it now. I can't remember when I last felt so good! The only lingering problems are not being able to sleep for very long, but this is getting better, and feeling a bit spaced now and then (oh, and I’m still sneezing a fair bit and feeling a bit coldy), but compared to being a zombie, I really don’t mind - I'm feeling really contented. I can't believe I wasn't made aware that I'd have such a tough time stopping taking these pills.
I just wanted to get in touch with you all to let you know that it is possible to stop taking these nasty pills if you want to, and if I can do it (I have a very limited supply of willpower) then anyone can. You feel pretty ropey for a while, but it does pass and each day is better than the previous one, until suddenly you feel great – honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was naturally happy, rather than the med-induced ‘happiness’; it’s totally different and so much better.  If you're taking the pills for pain, then speak to the doc about something that may be safer to take during pregnancy. Also, paracetamol helps with the flu-like symptoms. Finally, in my experience, if you need help then ask for some - I was dead embarrassed about the fact that my body was addicted to prescription meds, but no one batted an eyelid - they were all full of sympathy and wanted to help me to do everything I could to make the pregnancy run as smoothly as possible.
