Hi S,

Your menstrual cycle starts -

Day 1 with your period starting.

During your period the lining of your uterus is being "shed" while a new lining grows getting ready to host a fetus if you get pregnant.  Normally this lasts 5-6 days.

Sometime between days 11 and 16, it varies in all women, you will ovulate.  The egg will be released from your ovaries and begin traveling down the fallopian tubes.

48 hours after ovulation, the egg is not viable (it dies) and you are unlikely to conceive.  You are now in what is called the "luteal" phase (12 or so days).  Basically, hormones maintain the lining of the uterus in case you do get pregnant.  It continues until you have your next period.

FYI - sperm can remain viable for about 5 days in your body.

Hope it helps.
