Amphetamine salts and mouth sores. OK. It is not an allergic reaction. It is not an std and it is not cancer. Its a side effect of the speed. Not just adderal. Anything that speeds up your metabolism will speed up your body... Mouth, hands.. Everything. The best approach is to lower your dose. When you first start taking a form of speed. Start slow. Let your body have time to adjust, it is a big change. Second. Keep busy. If your starting to notice that your moving your mouth, rubbing your tounge around, licking your lips STOP. Grab a piece of gum. Less minty the better. Grab a tic-tac. Anything that'd not abrasive will help. Third. If you've tried all of these things and they didn't help. Well you've got a sore now. And since your body is speeding, even tho you don't want to rub it.. You probably are anyways. There are a lot of remedies for curing canker sores but at this point you just need to protect your tounge from the abuse. Try "Kanka" (found at most drug stores in the dental section) it is a medicine like orajel but it leaves a filmy residue. If you apply on the sore(s) it will protect your tounge from the rubbing. If you search "relief from canker sores" there are plenty if home remedies. None of which I've been brave enough to try. And lastly and probably most importantly. KEEP HYDRATED!!! Your body needs water more than food so it will help if your having problems eating. It will help with the dry mouth and the sores. You will also notice your skin feeling a little sensitive. Almost like its wind blown. This is dehydration. Keep bottles of water handy! Eventually your body will adjust to the medication and these annoying side effects will go away. As you notice your body handling these problems you can start dosing up to your prescribed dosage, if you feel the need. I hope this helps I've been on ADD medication for over 20 years. And its the same way for me every time I change meds. This is how I cope.

The connection is salt adderall is made of amphetamine salts this is not the exact nMe uf u look up generic adderall capsules the exact name of the ingredients (salts) is this name anyway becAuse of the salts it created salt blisters on the tongue mouth dry and chapped lips etc the inflammation sore mouth is from both dehydration and clenching grinding gum helps keep from to much mouth aerobics but the blisters are inevitable because of the sAlt to help prevent and ease these blisters suck on antacids the calcium in them helps calm the the acidity in the salt from developing too many blusters and the chalkiness fizzles the burn of the existing salt blisters if ur mouth becomes extremely sore swollen and blistered use mouth sore remedies that contain BENZOCAINE it works miracles keep hydrated use combination of icey beverages/foods then hot tea and soup easier to swallow and soothes while keeping u hydrated which prevents further irritation and swolling

You are not alone. I recently experienced the same thing with not only adderall, but phentermine also. I did the medical rounds and was checked and rechecked but not positive for anything. Now it seems that paxil is doing it, too. It seems to only happen with meds with stimulant properties. Hope your is better.

How much water have you been drinking? That sounds like it could possibly be from dehydration. Burning sensation from raw or cracked skin related to lack of hydration. Skin will be less resilant, brittle, and small cracks in the lips/mouth - the healing of new tissue will also be delayed. Water is so important! Side effects of the medication can indirectly cause the tongue to be more sensitive - dehydration as well too. The weird taste in the mouth is sometimes referred to as "metallic taste" when listed as a side effect. Lack of water and electrolyte imbalances make all of these worse (and make the breath smell occasionally). During the week waiting period, before your mouth returned to normal, did you stay hydrated and/or sleep well at night. They may seem like ludacris questions, however, sleep is when our bodies undergo regenerative processes. Adderall does seem to keep certain people up later at night than originally desired. When you spoke with your doctor, was he the one who prescribed? Is the MD a primary care or psych doctor. Dx of anxiety and add/adhd have been shown in studies to be a common presentation. Anxiety can present in a multitude of ways - from rituals to obsessive thoughts to fear. Somatic presentations are extremely common when dealing with anxiety. Our body reacts to what the brain tells it to. Anxiety is associated with BMS, tongue swelling secondary to inadvertly resting/pushing tongue against teeth grooves, and globus hystericus/sensat; which is described as a dry large lump on throat, feeling like there throat is being closed up, a pushing sensation against the back of the throat, and/or pain to the point of inability to swallow or eat. Was your dosage increased, did you switch from one generic to another, do you smoke, did you have any hives? All these answers can help better determine what may have happened. Stimulants can cause anxiety, even in people who may have not had it before. It works along the adrenergic system, which is our "fight or flight response". Pupils dilate, blood shunted from extremities to the heart, anxiety, increased HR, etc. as it could have progressed into respiratory obstruction and/or anaphylactic shock, particularly since this is an extended release formulation. The best thing is to talk with a board certified MD that specializes in dx and rx of adhd medications. If you are already seeing one, and your not satisfied, fire him! The reason I am replying to this year old post is due to the last paragraph written. From what you stated, you are going to fill out a serious adverse report with the FDA, because you believe the medicine caused "initial stages of respiratory obstruction and anaphylaxis - like symptoms due to it's continued administration". So, I'm understanding that you believe that this medicine was setting you up for either a partial obstruction - which is evidenced by sternum retraction, stridor, hypoxemia, and/or uneven breathing; or complete obstruction - lack of oxygen to lungs. The obstruction would be secondary to the anaphylaxis; as the edema is what would prevent airflow. You said anaphylaxis like symptoms??? I'm gathering that is the swelling of the tongue (no sores, lacerations, breakdown, or trauma - it just started swelling) pushing against your throat, burning pain, and inability to swallow. This is ludacris! You are submitting a SERIOUS adverse drug report because you took an extended release version of an already prescribed medicine and your tongue swelled, your lips and mouth burnt, and you were in the first stages of respiratory obstruction??? If you were having anaphylaxis secondary to the medication, which can happen, you would probably display atleast one other symptom (like hives, facial swelling, external neck swelling, amigo edema, labored breathing, respiratory distress, etc) but fromt what you have told us, you have a swollen tongue - that didn't go away for a week - and and you felt it pushing against your throat. Which you felt was the onset of respiratory obstruction. Did you take Benadryl or go to the ER and get an epinephrine injection? If I believed I was in the process of developing an obstruction or anaphylactic shock; I would call 911 or get there as fast as I could - hopefully before I pass out from lack of oxygen. I am all for reporting drugs and keeping pharmaceuticals in check. But - ruling out of other causes always comes first. Having a good doctor to listen and put the pieces together is key. Maybe the dose caused anxiety or perhaps and underlying condition. Or the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine were too high for your individual body's therapeutic range. That's my two cents. Advocate to your doctors until they offer you a solution or etiology. A "hmmm I've never heard of that" is a sorry excuse to a client that has a legit problem with the medication that he prescribed. Don't blame the drugs/companies because the doctor failed you. Demand more options and explanations about your health. You are paying him to oversee and find outcomes to optimize your most important assest - your life! Best of luck and I hope you get this figured out. This was my longest rant ever so I apologize - there's not much to do at work right now, and I can't stand to have my mind idle (I'll fall asleep)!

I think I found the solution to this problem; at least it worked for me.

I had been prescribed Adderall xr (don’t remember the dosage) few years ago and I didn't have any problems with it other than bit of dry mouth. I went off of it a year later and just got back on it again recently but this time I was prescribed Adderall 20mg ir.

By day 3 my throat was really irritated and my mouth was sensitive. So I lowered the dose to 10mg and drank lots of Gatorade (hydration is the key). 10mg is not enough for me but I think introducing a high dose of Adderall to your system right from the start might be the reason for the crazy side effects. My solution is to hydrate yourself (drink LOTS of liquid), cut down your does by half and slowly increase the dose within a week or two. This might not work for everyone but it did for me.

I have been experiencing the same problem. I used to get really thirsty when I first started taking adderall, had no trouble eating. Then I stopped hydrating as often and that is when the sore throat began (only when I would try to eat something). I would recommend drinking lots of water and especially right BEFORE you eat. Works for me :)

Nope, I have it too but from Vyvanse. I can tolerate it but it's annoying. Causes dry mouth, tongue sore, feels raw, makes me do a tongue sucking/rolling thing. Helps to chew gum.

I take adderall and when i do i tend to clench my jaw and suck on my mouth alot when i do also. Because of this i dont take the medication regularly. At this moment i took an adderall several hours ago and my tongue is sensitive and has a burning senstation from sucking it through my front teeth. I also have multiple swollen areas on my cheeks and lips from sucking those through my teeth as well. I can not control this without paying attention and forcing myself not to. And like you mentioned after i quit taking it again they will go away. If you need to take adderall and you cant stand this side effect i would highly suggest takig a different medication. Adderall is amphedamine which is speed, if youve ever seen the movie requium for a dream thats what the mom was on and it made her grind her teeth.

I am going thru the same thing right now. I thought I had stumbled into some weird dimension where brushing your teeth and eating were punishment for something.  I want to cut my tounge out right now.  I don't know if I'm brave enough to cut them out because the sores run all the way down both sides of my tounge, sort of on the underneath.  My soft pallate feels like someone set it on fire and put out the fire with an ice pick and it hurts to swallow.  I was convinced it was throat and tounge cancer.  No no... just the best medication I've ever taken, the one that makes me feel human, is now causing my mouth to fall off.  I'm thrilled.
