I'm a 40 year old male who have suffered from Insomnia for many, many years.

I have been on various sleep medications thruout this time.

Recently I have been diagnosed with a moderate case of sleep apnea. I chose to undergo a tonsillectomy to help with my breathing and a few other life changes to try and avoid the CPAP machine for the rest of my life. My ENT believes this can be acheived.

However my real problem is, I can not sleep without taking some type of sleep medication. I know people with sleep apnea should not take sleeping pills, but what are my options?

I admit, I have above average stressors in my life becuase of my work and family resonsiblities - but who doesn't?

I get very anxious arond bed time and really do have a problem trying to relax around bed time.

Reading a book sometimes helps, but I usually can not remain asleep.
When I take my self off the sleeping pills - the withrawls are off the scale! Last January I did this and stayed up 11 days. That's right, it wasn't a typo - 11 days.

I can function with very little if any sleep, but I don't want to.

I envy my wife with her ability to fall asleep at the drop of a hat.

I guess I'm just wondering if any one else out there has ever had similar situations and what they did to over come them.

Any response would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Update.

It's been two months since I had my procedure.

My Tonsillectomy worked wonders. Not only did my ENT clear me of Sleep Apnea (there were some lifestyle changes involved also), but I can now sleep at will without any sleep aid.

Also a bonus from all this - my wife says after 14 years she can now get a good nights sleep because my snoring is barely noticeable.

Life is getter better!

Happy New Year everyone!
