Hello, guys. My brother has some back pain and he suspects he may have kidney stones, but he is not sure. I wonder which method is good for discovering this. Is a kidney ultrasound a good way to discover this condition? I would appreciate all your replies considering my post. Thanks.

Hi, there. Ultrasound is a good method, but not the best. It is painless and non-invasive and that is why patients like it. However, if the stone is smaller, then there is risk of not being discovered. That is why intravenous pyelography is the most appreciated. A contrast dye is being injected in vein. The whole urinary tract is colored and exposed by an X ray. This visualizes all and stones can be showed if they exist. Very small kidney stones can be discovered by spiral CT scan. I hope I gave you a proper piece of info. Good luck to your brother!
