what marley said IS correct. alcohol by interfering with the enzyme breakdown, less of then antibiotic is digested at the time you take it, meaning the dose is less effective because it may not reach peak level (the amount of a drug needed to have an effect)...which can mean that the infection can have time to recover...also, if a greater amount of the drug is present in your blood stream for a longer period, the next time you take the drug, the dose may be higher than intended, and cause more side effects. This would especially be the case with shorter, more potent doses, like once a day for five days, vs. 3 times a day for ten.
there are about 5 different kinds of antibiotics you should not take with alcohol or it could be toxic, most other ones will only increase side effects...basically, the smart thing is to not drink when you are sick because it takes longer for you to recover 8-|

I went out drinking one night for my friends 30th birthday while on an antibiotic for mild bronchitis and woke up the next morning feeling awful...thought nothing of it, just thought I was hung over now as well as being sick (which I know was my own fault but I figured I would pay the price for my friends 30th). About a week later my boyfriend took me to the hospital (and I don't remember this) and I ended up having to stay for there for the week of thanksgiving with pneumonia. The doctor told me my blood oxygen levels Were so low that my body was pretty much suffocating. I was so out of it that I don't even remember my boyfriend taking me to the ER. Before he brought me I slept for about 5 days without eating anything but cough drops and hot tea. The reason the antibiotics didn't get rid of the bronchitis and it progressed to pneumonia is because I went out drinking for my friends birthday. I was on day 8 of a 10 day prescription and the doctor said it doesn't matter that I was almost finished with my course of antibiotics because while alcohol doesn't directly cause the antibiotics to not be effective, it does lower your bodies ability to fight and get better because the alcohol is metabolized in a similar way as the medicine, which means that the alcohol and the antibiotics are competing with each other. He also said that not all antibiotics are metabolized in the same way so this may not apply to you. This really scared me and I am not one to get freaked out by this kind of stuff (I had a cough for a few weeks before going to the doctor and being diagnosed with bronchitis because I thought it was just a cold and i was fine). Anyway my point is just that I wouldnt have had to spend thanksgiving in the hospital while my whole family was having a great time in Florida if I didn't go out drinking that one night...I was feeling so much better and then I was soooo much worse! I still have an annoying cough and dont feel 100% and it is march! I first started coughing and not feeling well in the beginning of October...I am so mad at myself for having to go out drinking that night when I was feeling so much better because the consequences suck!
