My son was diagnosed with a frenic nerve palsy as an infant, At the time I was told half of his diaphragm was affected but it expanded enough for both of his lungs to fill adequately.

He is now 7 years old and every time there are warnings locally for people with pre existing breathing conditions I often wonder if these warning include him.

Is frenic nerve palsy like athsma or other lung conditons in that poor air quality, smoke exposure or viruses can affect the ability for someone to breath?

Hi there ... I hope your son is well during this unprecedented health crisis.

I am not a doctor, but a friend of mine had similar issue, I think he has unilateral phrenic nerve palsy. This is related to paralysis of the part of his diaphragm. It is more neurological but still affects his breathing. Any patients with chronic issues should be aware and careful during this coronavirus pandemic.

The luck is that this virus doesn't affect kids that much, but still it is a new virus and hospitals around the world report new syndromes even with children.

I think your son is a healthy, with healthy lungs, but the virus could weaken the muscles and even mess up with our neurological system, so I'd take all possible precautions and protect him from potential infection until the vaccine is available. It is a rough time for all of us, but we'll come through.

I wish you all the best, and take care!
