Hi! I’ve just come from my dentist and he told me that I have dental plaque and that I need to clear it. He told me also something about dental plaque and heart disease. I didn’t understand him well. Is there a link between dental plaque and heart disease? And what is it?

Yes, there is definitely a link between dental health and heart disease. Dental plaque is teeming with millions of bacteria that when not removed regularly can cause gingivitis or inflammation of the gums. If this is again ignored, a periodontal pocket will start to form. The bacteria flowing in the blood stream can adhere to regions of atherosclerotic plaques, found in large blood vessels such as those leading to or coming into the heart.
