I have type 2 diabetes that I could manage with dietary restrictions and metformin, but after I had gallbladder removal surgery some six months ago, my blood sugar levels are again getting too high. Because of this, my doctor suggested I try taking Onglyza with metformin - she even gave me a free sample.

I’ve been taking this medication for 15 days now and I got both swollen tonsils and urinary tract infection that doesn’t seem to be letting down even though I started taking antibiotics 3 days ago. Is this UTI and tonsil infection related to me stating Onglyza?

Hello,

most common side effects of Onglyza are precisely what you're experiencing: urinary tract infections, as well as tonsil and throat infections.

Your infections should subside after you take the full course of antibiotics, however, if they persist even after you finish the antibiotics, you definitely should go back to your doctor and talk to her about stopping Onglyza.
