Hi! I just had a total thryoidectomy on 08/08/06 for papillary carcinoma. The surgery went well and I have excellent prognosis. But right after I came home from the hospital, my throat started itching and I get this urge to cough and clear my throat which makes it terribly difficult since the wound is still fresh. This itchy dry cough keeps me awake all night long and the only relief I can get is if I sip some cold water. I'd appreciate it if somebody could advise me on what I should do to get some relief and get rid of this annoying cough. Should I take some cough medicine or is this just part of the post-surgery discomforts? All replies are welcome. Thank you.

Hi Henna,

First thing that can easy your post thyroidectomy is enough water. Fluids are very important in thyroidectomy recovery. It will ease your irritation of the throat and will help you with the process of healing. Ice cream can be also a good option to ease the irritation. Your diet is very important for the process of healing. The soft diet is advised in the first week. Try to suppress the cough as much as possible, because it will only give you pain. I know that this is hard but you have to try.

Have you received any medication for the pain? Usually the pain should be bearable, but if you are having too much pain you could use some over the counter medication
