Hi Susan,
Blood clots are a risk after any surgery, and are fairly common.
Likely it was caused by reduced activity or immobilization of the affected limb.
Usually you'd be prescribed blood thinners, Coumadin or similar, to help prevent them from forming, or put on an aspirin regimen.

My left calf has swollen and turned red and hot to touch, also it looked bruised. I had knee replacement 8 weeks ago. Have had numerous tests, but all negative. Not a blood clot, either. Any ideas what this can be?
