Some scientists are trying to produce processed meats such as burgers and sausages, from the cells taken from cow, chicken, pig, fish or other animals in laboratories. They believe this will reduce the need for the animals which are often held in not so idea conditions and in that way reduce the spread of disease from infected animals.

Techniques for engineering muscle cells and other tissues were first developed for medical use, but now a small amount of researchers is looking into growing edible muscle cells.

“The technology to produce something like a steak or chicken breast is still a way off but there’s a lot of technological challenge to producing something that has a structure to it “said the researchers.
