I have a friend that is 28 years old and she is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Lately she started to use some medicine called Largectil, I think. I always take care of her and I was helping her with some possible side effects she had with some other drugs. Now this new medicine seems to suit her, but there is something, that worries me. How this drug might affect her if she is pregnant, is there some special precaution about this topic for Largectil?

Each medicine has special precautions that should be well studied before starting with therapy. The same case is with Largactil, and she should have full information about risks. Safety for the use of Largactil or chloropromazine during pregnancy has not been established. It is not recommended that the drug be given to pregnant patients except when, in the judgment of the physician. The potential benefits should clearly outweigh possible hazards of Largactil. There are reported some side effects in newborn infants, whose mothers received some of this drug groups. Reproductive studies in rodents have demonstrated potential for embryo toxicity and increased neonatal mortality. The possibility of permanent neurological damage cannot be excluded. Beside this, we know that Largactil is excreted in the breast milk of nursing mothers. Because of all this, your friend should report her pregnancy to her doctor. He is going to decide if she needs to take off this medicine or not.
