I posted this on my Facebook wall  yesterday: "all of a sudden, i got this terrible upper back pain, running through my chest. no cough/colds,strenuous activities whatsoever. i remember experiencing a lower back pain in d past;maybe years ago. . . but, this is more severe. medical peep, could it be arthritis?"

I kept on researching on the possible cause of this discomfort until I was led to this site... So far,  the only culprit I could think of are the oily foods I took the day before. Or overeating, perhaps... My upper back pain worsened this morning that I couldn't sit. To my surprise, after bed rest, the pain was partially relieved... But, when I was eating this morning, I felt some kind of (bearable) pain on my left chest every time I would swallow.  Could this be dyspepsia?  To all of you experiencing the same pain, how's your eating habits? I recommend going to a doctor and doing a chest X-ray immediately. Not as a doctor, but as someone who already had those symptoms.

After a bit of looking into it the doctor found that I had a primary pneumothorax. It occurs when air escapes from the lungs to inside the chest cavity because of something like a hole in the lung tissue. The air trapped inside creates pressure mostly on the upper back of the lung that is damaged and is more painful when you breathe in because of the pressure. This happens more commonly with smokers. Treatment can be just rest or a small incision to remove the trapped air depending on the case.

Even if that is not your case, such unilateral pain should be investigated.

Hey everyone, when I went to brush my teeth and bent over when got a pain on the left side that almost brought me to my knees. Like many people, I started thinking the worst… heart attack, lung collapses, smoker disease!?! Wow, I was going headed to the hospital when I read that someone mention acid reflex on this site. I thought, yes my stomach is very, very sensitive. I toke some Rolaids, and started feeling better. I don’t know if this is a fix for everyone, and I am not a doctor so I am not giving advice. Check with a doctor!

I had this same problem it hurt with every breath after 2 cat scans and 2 kidney stone checks they still could not figure out what was worng.  My mother who is not a doctor told them it sounds like plursey so they said lets give it a shot.  they gave me an anti-inflamitory and I was good to go withen 20min.  Followed up with 800mg of ibprofin 4xs a day 2 days.  I have never had a problem since.  :0)

I too have this pain it is a very deep muscle. They are doing a treatment that they use a botox injection, because steriod inj can't penetrate that deeply. Ice pack 20 minutes every hour ibuprofen 800mg every 8hrs and also a tens unit drs can prescribe this. Deep massage helps as well

Sounds like you popped a rib out (or maybe a couple) it has happened to me three times. Saturday morning being the third. Going for an xray tomorrow morning but I know this kind of pain. It's probably a rib that popped out of place.
