I think he needs to seek medical attention and have a good physical examination. He could have a hernia or it could be a bruise or any of the many reasons for left sided pain. A thorough physical examination should clarify exactly what is going on with him. His doctor will give him peace of mind and he should definitely visit him. He will ask him to from his medical history and physical examination. Then his doctor will try to determine the cause of his left sided pain. Knowing the location of pain and its time pattern will help, so tell him to remember and notice any little sign. Beside this, the presence of other symptoms like fever, fatigue, general ill feeling, nausea, vomiting, or changes in stool might be helpful to determine his left sided pain. I cannot tell you for sure what it is without this, because there are many causes of left sided pain. The only way to give him right diagnosis is to examine him with complete anamnesis and testing.
