Living with one lung and catching heck from the wife every day for not wanting to walk. I lost my right lung to cancer helped along the way with smoking a pack a day for 61 years. The rehab is the hardest thing of them all. I choose not to have chemo or any treatment at all. I am checked every 6 months for any cancer and so far none.
I remember on 12-23-2011 my surgeon said if we wait until after Christmas I would probably bleed out. I was getting up in the morning and coughing up a half a dixie cup of blood, then lighting up a smoke. I even started back smoking a year after surgery. I finaly quit for good 3 months now.
I wish the best for your dad and there is life after surgery.

I just had my right lung removed about a month ago.I was initially told that the tumor I had was too large and the location prohibited removal.Thank goodness the first group of Doctors were wrong.I sent all my tests and info to Duke Medical University. I had my first consultation with my surgeon on June 13th at 9:30am. I was in recovery on June 14th about 7:30 pm.My right lung was gone and so was the cancer.I was very very lucky that it hadn't spread and was contained in the right lung.
I will pray that your sister gets some encouraging news as to the extent and staging of her cancer. If you don't like the info you're getting from the 1st Doctors please get more opinions.I was amazed at the difference in the diagnoses. If necessary get 2nd opinions and 3rd opinions ,etc.
I would just have to say that at this point with the limited info you have your Sister will have the tumor removed and with your help and others that love her she will overcome this situation. No problem.Easy as taking candy from a baby.

Hi, I just read about your baby that was born with one lung. My son was born with one lung and his heart on the opposite side. He too was very sick as a baby. Sometimes he use to be hospitalized because of his lung infections and his oxygen would get low. However as he got older it got a lot better. He is now 17 and is doing well. He very rarely gets sick. When he was a baby he was so under weight due to the fact of him being sick all the time and now he is almost 6 feet and is 180 pounds. I always thought he was going to be very tiny. It will get better as he gets older.

Hello,
I came upon this post by accident, looking for survival rates for patients with one lung. There are a number of us who have had pneumonectomy (lung removal). I am one of them. I lost my left lung due to a carcinoid tumor. How long ago? Sept 1996. In the beginning it was very difficult to manage my breath to speak and move around. But today at age 58 I am doing well. I can do everything. However, if I am climbing stairs, I will be out of breath so I just take it easy. I used to run 3 miles a day with one lung, just slower. So all of you, Losing a lung is only a setback that be overcomed. The other lung learns to compensate. So do you. So go out there and LIVE!
