Hello all,

I'm a Stryker Cervicore recipient as well. I had my surgery in September of 2008. I wass dragging my right leg and lost all strength on my right side. My whole left side went numb. I was introduced to the study at that time. I was told by multiple surgeons that I needed surgery or I'd be wheel chair bound if I didn't do it quickly. I had a severe compression at C3-C4 and was falling down. So being a former police officer and firefighter for the US Gov't I was always very active and had to maintain my health for my job. It was devistating news as I lost the ability to run or even jog. I was now facing a good probability of being disabled and the unknown scared me to death. I signed up for the proceedure and immediately had it done in Aventura, Florida. I didn't have any pain and was walking alot better immediately after surgery. I thought that the surgery was a great success but as the months passed I realized that I may never run or walk correctly again. Fast forward to 2013 my left arm has started having throbbing pains and it radiates down the right side arm as well usually hwen I'm sitting in a recliner or driving any distance. I thought at first I was having a heart attack but found out through tests that it wasn't heart related. I also recently was diagnosed with a 4.6 cm mass on my thyroid on my surgery entry side. Weird that this is happening all at the same time. I only discovered this issue as I almost passed out while driving on the Florida Turnpike when I yawned and thus something must have pressed against a nerve or artery which the surgeons say could have caused the faint spell. I am having surgery this month to remove the thyroid lobe and mass but they may take the whole thyroid out if needed. I'm having the proceedure done at University of Miami Sylvester Caner Center. We do not know if its cancer as I opted to pass on a biopsy as I know it needs to come out and I requested to move forward to remove it based on the complications I'm having.

With that said, I can't get any positive response from my surgeon regarding the Cervicore proceedure I had. I need some answers quickly and hope that someone has found out something positive in a resolution that may help me as well.

Thanks,

Chris

FOURTEEN PLAINTIFFS FILE SUIT AGAINST STRYKER / HOWMEDICA OVER CERVICORE IMPLANT

Posted on April 16, 2014 at 4:18pm by Zoll, Kranz & Borgess LLC

On Friday April 11, the law firm of Zoll, Kranz & Borgess, LLC filed a lawsuit behalf of a group of fourteen plaintiffs against Howmedica Osteonics Corp. (which does business as Stryker Spine) alleging Howmedica’s trial device called called CerviCore injured them.

According to the Complaint filed in Federal Court, nine of the plaintiffs had the device installed as part of an experimental trial conducted by Stryker. Four additional plaintiffs are spouses of the original nine and have suffered as a result of their husband’s or wife’s suffering.

The CerviCore device is an experimental metal-on-metal device that was implanted in between two cervical spine vertebrae. Stryker bills the device as an alternative to traditional fusion surgery.

Study documents show that up to 400 people may have been part of the study, with around 200 of them receiving the CerviCore device. It’s not known how many of those are suffering because of it.

All nine plaintiffs in this suit say the CerviCore device has caused them grave harm. Most or all are suffering metallosis symptoms and they allege Stryker either will not conduct proper metal exposure testing or conducted testing and will not release the results. The symptoms are very similar to the metallosis alleged to be caused by Stryker replacement hips.

Additionally, all nine say Stryker / Howmedica abandoned them. In most cases, the company sent a representative saying Stryker wanted to continue the CerviCore study, then, shortly after they signed new waivers, it abruptly ended the entire study and stopped monitoring their conditions.

The suit seeks damages for all the medical expenses, the lost work time, and the pain and suffering each person has endured. It also asks the court to punish Stryker / Howmedica and send a message that the way it treated these people is unacceptable.

Stryker / Howmedica has yet to respond to the allegations.
