For 6 months I have had burning pains in both arms. I tried osteopathy, painkillers and acupuncture. One doctor thought it was repetitive strain. After seeing so many GPs here in the UK I asked for an MRI scan. It shows c 6/7 disc degeneration with spinal compression. The neurologist says it cannot be put right by physiotherapy and has referred me a neurosurgeon. I am terrified of surgery but the neurologist told me the spinal canal is now only 6 mm at that point and I am at risk if I were to have a fall and my head was pushed forward or backwards. He says I could be much more at risk by waiting. Although I have not yet seen the neuro surgeon is it possible that surgey is the only way? - I am coping with the pain and I am so terrified of the thought of surgery (and all its risks) I am prepared to seek any other routes. This is all new to me so any advice gratefully accepted.

Cervical disc surgery is a complicated affair. Though neurosurgeons are good at that, yet there is always a minor chance of being in more pain and disability after the surgery. If you have only pain and no numbness. Then it can be managed conservatively. But if you have developed numbness in your fingers or hands then you should immediately go for the surgery. However, there is no harm in meeting a neurosurgeon. An evaluation by him, would give u a better idea of the state of affairs. Dont depend on the GP's as not all are aware of surgical decisions. And the neurosurgeon wont be taking you under the knife at the first visit...
