Hi, I am a 36 years old woman, and I have diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. A doctor prescribed me lotronex, and said that this is probably the only drug that can help me. However, I heard that some people died from using it. Is it true? Did anyone use this drug?

Hi, I heard of lotronex. It was taken off the market, because many people had adverse reactions to it, and five of them even died. One of these reactions was ischemic colitis, and it appeared in many cases. But lotronex is still used by women with severe diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), who didn’t respond to other treatments. Of course, it is only available on prescription. Lotronex works on neurons in the digestive tract. It obstructs the action of serotonin in the gut and decreases motility. You should start with a dose of 1 mg once a day for 4 weeks, and if you’re responding well to lotronex, ask your doctor to increase the dose.
